ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT wrestling team (4-1) picked up a pair of big wins on Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 23 Lycoming (10-2) and King's College (5-9) at the New York/Pennsylvania duals held at Clark Gymnasium. RIT opened the day with a 26-16 win over Lycoming and rolled to a 36-11 victory over King's.
Isaiah Ocasio (Vineland, NJ/Vineland),
Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion),
Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford),
Nicholas Greenquist (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose), and
Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) had two wins apiece for the Tigers.
The guys were anxious for competition and wanted to wrestle, test themselves, and make progress," said RIT head coach
Jason Bovenzi. "Coming out against Lycoming was huge, and everyone was ready to go. There was a lot of excitement and pride on how they competed and then we kept going with another big win against King's."
RIT never trailed in defeating No. 23 Lycoming.
Andrew Flanagan (Holley, NY/Holley) got the Tigers off on the right foot with a 9-1 win over Garrett Lockwood at 125 lbs.
Isaiah Ocasio (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) earned an 8-2 win over Will Newmiller at 133 lbs., while
Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion) made it 10-0 Tigers with an 8-5 win over Joseph Santomarco at 141 lbs.
Lycoming got on the board when Seth Lansberry, ranked No. 1 nationally at 149 lbs. defeated
Colby Hall (Deposit, NY/Deposit), but in the match of the afternoon,
Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) used a takedown 10 seconds into overtime to earn a dramatic 4-2 win over Trevor Corl at 157 lbs.
John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) gave the Tigers a 17-4 team lead with a 13-4 major decision over Hadyn Swartwood at 165 lbs. After Nolan Barger answered with a pin for Lycoming,
Nicholas Greenquist (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) defeated Brandon Conrad at 184 lbs. Travis Ogden cut the RIT lead to 20-16 with a pin at 197 lbs.
With the match on the line,
Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) made no doubt that RIT would emerge victorious, earning a pin 2:41 into the match to pick up the win and provide the 10-point margin of victory.
Against King's, Dakota Quick gave the visitors a quick 4-0 lead before the Tigers took the next four matches to lead 21-4. Sepor and
Colby Hall (Deposit, NY/Deposit) recorded back-to-back wins by fall to ignite the Clark Gymnasium crowd.
After two wins by King's cut the RIT lead to 21-11, the Tigers put the match away, as Greenquist earned a win by technical fall and
Joe Messare (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills) recorded a 10-0 win at 197 lbs. before Weinger won by forfeit.
"We still have work to do, but it was a great weekend, and we'll keep moving forward," said Bovenzi."
RIT is back in action on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14 at the prestigious Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College.
