Men's basketball loses to No. 4 Rochester, 73-72 on controversial late call

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (6-5) men's basketball team fell to No. 4 University of Rochester (11-0) 73-72 in non-conference action from Clark Gymnasium Tuesday evening. Rochester's Tucker Knox made two free throws with no time on the clock at the end of regulation to give the Yellowjackets the win.

With time running out in regulation and RIT leading 72-71, Knox drove the lane and drew a controversial foul as the buzzer sounded. That gave Knox a chance with no time on the clock to tie or win it for Rochester. He made the first and calmly drained the second to keep Rochester unbeaten on the season.

RIT shot 48.2 percent from the floor on 27-of-56 shooting. The Tigers made 7-of-17 from the arc, and were 11-of-19 from the foul line. Five Tigers scored in double figures led by Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and his 17 points. AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) added 13 points and seven assists, while Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tallied 13 points and had five rebounds. Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) scored 13 points, and Justin Schneider (Aurora, NY/Southern Cayuga) tallied 10 points and had six rebounds.

"I thought we played very well tonight," said RIT head Bob McVean. "We were more fluid on offense and turned up the defensive pressure. It is unfortunate that the game had to be decided like that at the end."

Mack Montague led Rochester with 24 points, while Knox and Ryan Clamage each tallied 10 points. Zack Ayers tallied six points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Leading 32-31 at the break, RIT opened the second half on an 11-2 run, taking a 43-33 lead on a free throw from Pierre-Louis with 16:48 left. It was the Tigers largest lead of the game. A pair of Aguilera free throws with 14:09 to play gave RIT a 47-37 lead.

Rochester responded with 14-4 run, tying the game at 51-51 on a pair of Michael Mangan free throws with 9:59 to play. RIT went back up 58-55 on a 3-pointer by Lewis moments later. Rochester responded by outscoring RIT 14-6 over the next 4:16, taking 69-64 lead on a 3-pointer from Montague. He drained three straight from long range during the run.

An incredible alley-oop between Aguilera and Horde gave RIT a 71-69 lead with 2:25 to play. Horde floated a pass over the Rochester defense and Aguilera skyed to grab it and flush the ball home. After Rochester tied the game, Horde was fouled and made a free throw with 17 seconds to play to make it 72-71 RIT. That set up the the final possession by the Yellowjackets.

RIT held a 40-34 rebounding edge, including 13 offensive boards. The TIgers tallied 22 second-chance points, and tallied 32 points in the paint.

RIT returns to action on Friday, January 6 when the Tigers play at Liberty League foe Vassar at 8 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
