Men's hockey suffers road loss at Atlantic Hockey foe Canisius

BUFFALO, NY – The RIT men's hockey team (10-14-1, 10-9-0 Atlantic Hockey) fell to host Canisius College (10-10-5, 9-4-4 Atlantic Hockey), 6-1 at HARBORCENTER on Saturday night.

Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) scored RIT's lone goal for the Tigers in the second period on assists from Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings) and goaltender Christian Short (Vaughan, Ontario/Surrey Eagles). Short made his second start of the season in goal, stopping 19 shots.

Nick Hutchison and David Parrottino each scored a pair of goals for the Golden Griffins, while Mike Sabatini and Ryan Schmelzer scored and Felix Chamberland had three assists. In goal, Charles Williams made 20 saves for the win.

Canisius out-shot RIT, 25-21. The Golden Griffins went 3-for-6 with the man-advantage, while RIT was 1-for-5.

"Tonight, we just never got going," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson, who appeared in his 600th game behind the bench tonight. "Give Canisius credit, they never gave us a chance to get back into the game and were the better team from start to finish."

RIT ran into penalty problems in a  chippy first period of play and Canisius scored the lone goal with 2:17 left, just as a Tiger penalty was expiring. Sabatini would get his second goal in two games, chipping in a loose puck in front off a feed from Geoff Fortman.

Short, making his second start of the season, made two great saves early, as he robbed Dylan McLaughlin on the rush from the left side. Moments later, he got across to rob Cameron Heath on a 2-on-1 rush to keep the game scoreless.

RIT's lone shot in the period came on a shorthanded rush, as Abbott Girduckis (Belleville, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) fed Powell in the neutral zone. With a Canisius player draped around him, Powell fired a hard  backhander that Williams was able to smother to keep the game scoreless.

The Golden Griffins would add three second period goals sandwiched around one by RIT and lead 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Canisius would score just 50 seconds into the second period, as Schmelzer would get behind the Tigers defense, take a feed from Chamberland and beat Short to make it 2-0.

RIT would challenge that the play was offside, but replay confirmed it was a good goal.

Just 1:30 later, Short made the initial save on a shot from the slot but could not locate the rebound and Hutchison put it in to make it 3-0.

RIT would receive three straight power-plays and on a 5-on-3, take advantage, as Powell would corral a pass from Brubacher in the neutral and go through all three Golden Griffins before beating Williams on the backhand for the beautiful highlight reel goal to make it 3-1. The goal was Powell's 11th of the season. Short also assisted on the goal, giving him his first collegiate point.

That goal gave RIT plenty of energy and momentum, as they carried the play for a good chunk of the period, but could not get the second goal.

Canisius would extend its lead to 4-1 late in the period, as McLaughlin forced a turnover deep in the RIT zone and fed Parrottino, who beat Short just under the crossbar from in close for his second goal of the season.

The Tigers pressed with some good chances early in the third period, but Williams was up to the task and Canisius would add two goals to make it a 6-1 final.

Tonight marked the fourth and final regular season meeting between the two schools, with Canisius winning all four contests.

RIT plays six of its final nine games on home ice to end the regular season. Next weekend, RIT welcomes Atlantic Hockey foe Bentley University to town for a pair of league games. Both Friday and Saturday's games from the Gene Polisseni Center start at 7:05 p.m.
