ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT women's hockey team (4-19-1, 2-7-1 College Hockey America) hits the road for the second straight weekend, to take on Penn State (5-15-4, 4-5-1 CHA) in a pair of late season CHA contests on Saturday and Sunday. Both games will take place at 2 p.m. from the Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pa.
The Tigers are coming off a series split at Mercyhurst which included their largest win of the season. The Lakers defeated the Tigers 5-2 last Friday Erie, but the Tigers bounced back with a dominant 4-0 victory the following day.
Brinna Dochniak (Marine on St. Croix, MN/Stillwater) and
Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate) scored on Friday, while
Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep),
Mackenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton),
Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) and Wallace tallied goals on Saturday.
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) recorded her second career shutout in Saturday's win, making 37 saves.
On Monday, senior
Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate) was named the CHA Player of the Week, while freshman
Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) was named the league's Rookie of the Week. Wallace (two goals and two assists) and Haywood (one goal and two assists) combined for seven points last weekend at Mercyhurst. Wallace now ranks second on the team in goals (five) and points (nine) this season. Haywood current is the highest-scoring rookie on the team, with five points.
The Nittany Lions come into the weekend series with the Tigers winless in their last 11 games. Penn State last won on Nov. 11 against Lindenwood, and has gone 0-9-2 since. Laura Bowman leads the Nittany Lions offense with 25 points (14 goals and 11 assists), while Amy Peterson is just behind with 21 points (11 goals and 10 assists) this season. Bowman ranks ninth nationally in goals per game (0.64), while Peterson is fourth in Division I with five power-play goals this year. Freshman Daniela Paniccia has played in 16 of Penn State's 24 games this season, holding a 5-8-2 record with a 2.72 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
The Tigers lead the all-time series between the two schools, 12-8-2. Earlier this season, Penn State swept RIT in a two-game series in Rochester. The Nittany Lions won 2-0 in the "Throwback Thursday" game at Ritter Arena on Oct. 27, and won 5-0 the following day at the Gene Polisseni Center.
RIT head coach
Scott McDonald is now just two wins shy of reaching 200 for his career, all at RIT. He has the chance to clinch number 200 this weekend at Penn State.
