WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The RIT wrestling team (6-4) finished in tenth place overall at the the Budd Whitehill Invitational Duals hosted by Lycoming College and held at Lamade Gymnasium. On Saturday, RIT started the day with an 18-18 draw, but earned the tiebreaker point to win 19-18 against Oswego State (3-8) before falling to Williams College (3-2), 24-15.
Senior
Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion) (141 lbs.) and sophomore
Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) (157 lbs.) won both of their matches on the day to each cap off a perfect 5-0 weekend. Sepor is now 18-1 in 2016-17, while King is 15-3. Both wrestlers are 9-0 in dual meets.
Sophomore
John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) also picked up two decisive wins at 165 lbs. to help RIT on Saturday. He downed Jeff Lombardi of Oswego State, 14-7 and rolled to a 20-3 technical fall victory over Luke Anselmi of Williams.
In the opener, RIT trailed 7-0 and 12-4, but rallied to take an 18-15 on the strength of major decision wins Sepor, King, and
Joe Messare (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills) (197 lbs.), sandwiched around victories by Donohue and
Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) (174 lbs.). Oswego would end the match in a tie with a win at heavyweight. RIT would earn the victory and advance to the ninth place on a tie-breaker, as they had 80 total points to 75 for Oswego. Messare's 21-point outburst was a key contribution for RIT.
Against Williams, RIT led 15-8 on the strength of wins by
Isaiah Ocasio (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) (133 lbs.), Sepor, King, and Donohue, before the Ephs earned 16 unanswered points in winning the final four matches.
"We wrestled with intensity and heart all weekend," said RIT head coach
Jason Bovenzi. "The most exciting part of the weekend is that we fough hard and wrestled several traditional powers and were one match away from defeating three of those teams."
On Friday, RIT defeated Thiel, 42-3 and lost to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (7-3), 21-16 and The College of New Jersey, 20-13 to kick off action at the Budd Whitehill Duals.
RIT is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Oswego for the Empire Conference Championship that begins at 10 a.m.
