Wrestling goes 1-2 on day one of Budd Whitehill National Duals

Tigers defeat Thiel, fall to Wisconsin Eau-Claire and The College of New Jersey

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The RIT wrestling team (5-3) went 1-2 at the Budd Whitehill National Duals hosted by Lycoming College and held at Lamade Gymnasium on Friday. RIT defeated Thiel (1-7), 42-3 and lost to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (7-3), 21-16 and The College of New Jersey (6-6), 20-13.
 
The Tigers will take on Oswgeo State Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and conclude the tournament with a match at 12 p.m.
 
Seniors Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion) (141 lbs.) and Nicholas Greenquist (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) (184 lbs.), along with junior Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) (285 lbs.), and sophomore Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) (157 lbs.) each went 3-0 on the day. Sepor is now 16-1 this season, while Weinger leads the team with 17 victories and Greenquist and King are right behind with 14 and 13, respectively.
 
In the opener over Thiel, RIT rolled to the resounding victory on the strength of two forfeits, two pins, three major decisions, and two decisions. Andrew Flanagan (Holley, NY/Holley) earned a 15-4 win over Justin Walter to open the day for the Tigers. John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) and Weinger recorded pins in the victory, as RIT scored the first 36 points of the match. 
 
Against Wisconsin Eau-Claire, the Blugolds opened up a 9-0 lead before Sepor earned a 10-2 victory at 141 lbs. to cut the lead to 9-4. King earned his second win of the day at 157 lbs. earning a pin in 2:10 to cut Eau-Claire's lead to 12-10, but the Blugolds would win the next two matches to go up 19-10. Greenquist would win at 184 lbs. to give RIT a chance, but Cecil Philson put the match away for Eau-Claire at 197 lbs. Weinger ended the match by rallying for a 9-7 win at 285 lbs. for his second victory of the day.
 
That loss snapped RIT's three-match win streak.
 
RIT would battle The College of New Jersey in the final match of the day, but just could not gain the upper hand. The Lions would take the first two matches before Sepor won his third contest of the day, 6-1 over Anthony Gagliano. King would also make it three wins for him on the day with a 5-0 win over Luke Balina, before the Lions upped their lead to 17-6. Greenquist would earn a major decision win at 184 lbs. and Weinger would win 3-1 at 285 lbs.
