TROY, NY — The RIT (5-3-1, 1-1-0 Liberty League) women's soccer team fell to host Renselaaer (8-1, 1-0-0 Liberty League) 1-0 in the Tigers' first road Liberty League match of the season on Friday afternoon.
The Engineers scored in the 14th minute of the game on Emily Kaplan's fifth goal of the season, and neither team was able to find the net for the final 76 minutes of play. The shots were 13-11, in favor of RPI, while the Engineers fired seven of those on net, compared to three for the Tigers.
Senior goalie Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) sent away six of the seven shots on net, and forced RPI's Dali Alarian to fire her shot on a dangerous breakaway in the 81st minute over the net. The Tigers defense also stood strong in front of Fisher, defending all six corner kicks for RPI. The Tigers had just two on their offense end of the field.
RIT freshman Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) had a match-high with five shots, one of which was on target, while RPI's goal scorer, Kaplan, led the match with two shots on goal.
"RPI is always a tough team to play," said head coach Liz Masterson. "It was an even battle with neither team creating a lot of chances. We'll look to refocus for Skidmore tomorrow."
Rensselaer is receving votes in the latest NSCAA Division III national poll. Rensselaer leads the all-time series between the two schools, 6-5-2.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday as they finish the weekend road trip with a match at Skidmore, starting at 2 p.m.
