ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (4-3-2, 1-0-1 Liberty League) men's soccer team defeated Rensselaer (2-5-2, 0-1-0 Liberty League) 2-1 in Liberty League action from windy Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon.
Mike Reverdatto (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) and
Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY /Hilton) each scored for the Tigers, who improve to 1-0-1 in conference action this season.
Shots were 11-10 in favor of RIT. Each team took six corner kicks.
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) got the win in net for RIT, making seven saves. Ryan Nealon got the start for Rensselaer, making three saves in the first half. Matt LaBranche played the second half and made one save.
"Today was a good win for us," said RIT head coach
Bill Garno. "We played possibly our best game overall of the season, and its nice to have four points out of two conference games."
Rensselaer had two good chances early in the first half on shots from Vito Mesiti and Dylan Weitz in the tenth minute. Mesiti fired a shot from inside RIT's six-yard area that Cinibulk turned aside. The rebound came to Weitz, but his shot was blocked away by a Tigers defender.
Reverdatto had a great chance in the 15th minute, but his shot was turned aside by Nealon. The rebound came to DeFeo who sailed his shot over the top of the crossbar.
Gabe El-Ghandour had a chance halfway through the first half when he fired a shot off a free kick. He caught the shot clean, but Cinibulk was there again to turn the shot aside and keep the game scoreless.
The Tigers finally broke through in the 40th minute on Reverdatto's first goal of the season. He found himself with space inside the RPI penalty area after a giveaway. He took advantage and fired a shot that deflected off a sprawling Nealon and in to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at halftime.
RIT made it 2-0 on DeFeo's goal in the 51st minute.
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) started the play when he freed
Alex Ptucha (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) down the flank with a well-timed ball. Ptucha sent a service into the Rensselaer penalty box. DeFeo made the run down the channel, gathered, and fired a hard shot into the net for his first of the season.
Rensselaer got back a goal in the 70th minute when Devon Baughen scored off an assist from Tim Stevens.
With the win, RIT improves to 15-14-5 all time versus Rensselaer.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they host Skidmore College at 2 p.m. from Tiger Stadium.
