ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT men's soccer team (1-1) dropped its first game of the season with a close 1-0 loss against SUNY Morrisville on day two of the 2016 Doug May Memorial Tournament at Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Morrisville's Joe Sheehan scored the only goal in the second minute of the game.
"We defended fairly well, but made a couple mistakes on the goal," said RIT head coach Bill Garno. "Collectively on the weekend the defense was pretty good, though. With 26 first and second year players, we get why they don't move together quite yet."
Shots were 11-8 in favor of Morrisville, four of which were fired on target. The Tigers had three shots on net and took six corner kicks throughout the game. Mick Keilan got the win for the Mustangs, with three saves. Sophomore Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) took his first loss of the season with three saves.
RIT attempted a comeback and came very close to tying the game up several times during the second half. In the 80th minute, Gene Sicoli (Commack, NY/Commack) nearly scored, with an open shot from 20-yards out going just over the crossbar, after a couple great passes to get him open.
Cinibulk and the Tiger defense played strong in the second half, giving the team a chance at a comeback. The Mustangs took seven shots, one on target, in the second half.
The Tigers won their opening game on Friday, a 1-0 victory over Buffalo State College.
RIT returns to action on Sept. 10 when they take on King's College (PA) in its first game of the Potsdam College Cup at 2:30 p.m.
