POTSDAM, NY -- Sophomore
Ryan McMaster (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored in the 73rd minute to give the RIT men's soccer team (2-1-0) a 1-0 win over King's College (Pa.) in round one of the Potsdam College Cup on Saturday. The Tigers will face host SUNY Potsdam in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
McMaster scored off an assist from
Tyler Hatch (Concord, NH/Tilton School) in the 73rd minute to break a scoreless draw to that point. RIT's defense was stout again on Saturday, holding the Monarch's to seven shots overall, and only two on target.
The Tigers held a 15-7 shot advantage, firing six shots on net. RIT took four corner kicks to three for King's. Sophomore
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) picked up his second clean sheet win of the season, making two saves. Owen Geedey took the loss for the Monarchs, making five stops.
Despite not scoring, RIT did fire seven shots in the first half, including two on net.
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had a shot on cage early in the game that Geedey was able to save.
Cam Shipley (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) had a good chance off a corner kick. He got position inside the box and sent a header that went wide of the far post. Cinibulk had to be sharp on a shot from King's at the top of the box that kept tha game scoreless at the half.
In the second half, RIT had a scare early, on a defensive miscue that led to a shot from Jonathan Nixon from 20 yards out that sailed just over the cross bar and out of danger. Garno had a half chance off a good build up from the back by the Tigers in the 65th minute. He wove his way free and fired a shot from distance that just missed the post.
The Tigers finally broke through in the 73rd minute off another build-up from defense. Hatch got the ball and sent a ball into the penalty area. McMaster made the run and fired into the far corner for his first goal of the season.
RIT's defense was strong down the stretch not letting the Monarch's and sort of serious attack. The Tigers are 6-5-1 all time versus SUNY Potsdam.
