ROCHESTER, NY -- Junior
Dean Kouroupas (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) converted a penalty kick in the 97th minute to give the RIT (3-3-1) men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Nazareth College (3-3-1) in non-league action from Tiger Stadium Tuesday afternoon. With the win RIT improves to 27-6-5 all time versus the Golden Flyers.
"We are very happy to get the result today," said
RIT head coach
Bill Garno. "I was glad we could come back, battle, and get the win today after Saturday."
Shots were 15-7 in favor of RIT, who took eight corner kicks to none for the Golden Flyers.
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) picked up the win in net for the Tigers, makng two saves. Brian Wilkin took the loss for Nazareth, making seven saves.
Nazareth had a chance to to take the lead with a little under 19 minutes to play in the first half. Ben Garcia broke in on Cinibulk, who came off his line to cut down the angle and made the stop on Garcia's shot keeping it scoreless.
RIT took the lead in the 27th minute on a goal from
Akram Meza (Troy, NY/Troy).
Gene Sicoli (Commack, NY/Commack) and
Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY /Hilton) had the assists on the play. DeFeo got free down the flank, feeding Sicoli with a pass. Sicoli took a hard shot that Wilkin saved, but the rebound came right to Meza who tapped it in first-time for his first of the season.
Ryan McMaster (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had a chance towards the end of the first half to extend the RIT lead.
Adam Bem (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) whipped in a service that McMaster got a head to. Wilkin was wary in his goal mouth and made the save to keep it a one-goal lead for RIT. RIT had another chance in the second half off a corner kick. The ball was loose in the Nazareth penalty area and was deflected by a Nazareth defender, luckily, Wilkin was there to make the save.
The Golden Flyers tied the game in the 85th minute when Lucas Bennett fired a shot from 15 yards out that beat Cinibulk to the far post, tying the game at 1-1. Sicoli had a great chance with time running out in regulation on his shot from 15 yards out, but he fired it right at Wilkin who made the save.
In the first overtime session, a Nazareth defender was whistled for a foul inside his own penalty box. Kouroupas stepped up and calmly scored for his first of the season and gave RIT the 2-1 victory.
"it is a great win and a good result for us," said Garno. "Nazareth was well organized and played hard and we are happy to get the win heading into conference play."
The Tigers begin conference play this weekend when they face Clarkson University at 3 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
