ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's soccer team opened the 2016 campaign with an impressive 1-0 win over Buffalo State on day one of the 2016 Doug May Memorial Tournament.
Adam Bem (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored the lone goal in first minute and RIT's defense held on for the win.
"It was a great win," said RIT head coach
Bill Garno. "We battled hard, which was good to see. The defensive effort was great today. (Goalkeeper)
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) was outstanding today, overall, a great first step and opening start for us."
Shots were 18-5 in favor of Buffalo State, with the Bengals firing five shots on net. The Tigers had two shots on target and took two corner kicks. Cinibulk got the win in net making five saves. William Banahene took the loss for the Bengals with two saves.
Bem gave the Tigers an early on a nice build-up from the midfield just 30 seconds into the contest.
Gene Sicoli (Commack, NY/Commack) got free down the flank and played a ball to
Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY /Hilton). DeFeo sent a serivce into Bem who tucked a shot into the open net for his first goal of the season.
Cinibulk and RIT's defense held strong, holding the Bengals at bay.
Scott Fishel (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna),
Cam Shipley (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and
Tristan Scott (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) were stout in front of Cinibulk who was a commanding presence inside his penalty area. The RIT goalkeeper came up with a big save with a little under 20 minutes to play in regulation when Drew Braun sent in a service off a free kick. Brandon Galanti ran onto the ball and headed a shot on target. Cinibulk was keen to the shot and was able to gobble it up.
RIT returns to action on Saturday when the Tigers host SUNY Morrisville at 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
