ROCHESTER, NY -- Playing at rain-soaked Fauver Stadium, the RIT (2-3-1) men's soccer team was defeated by the University of Rochester (5-0-0) 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 95th minute of the fifth annual Hillside Community Shield Saturday night. The two teams played after nearly 100 minutes of delays. Lightning delayed the game for little less than an hour at the end of the first half, and the lights went out in the stadium in the second half.
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) was outstanding in net for RIT making seven saves, including four big saves in the second half. Patrick Conway got the win for the Yellowjackets, making one save. Shots were 13-4 in favor of the Yellowjackets.
Cinibulk was sharp from the opening whistle, making a stop on a shot by Jeff Greblick in the first minute. After a slow start, RIT began to generate some scoring chances.
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) played a ball to
Akram Meza (Troy, NY/Troy) who was a yard offside.
Alex Ptucha (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) had a chance in the 20th minute. He made a run down the middle and Meza played a nice ball to him, but Conway made the save on his shot.
With 6:18 to play in the first half, a thunderstorm barreled through with lightning, delaying the match for nearly an hour. The two teams resumed action and closed out the first half. After the break, RIT was on the front foot, creating some decent chances early in the second half.
Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY /Hilton) and
Gene Sicoli (Commack, NY/Commack) found pockets of space inside the Yellowjackets defense.
Rochester slowly gained a foothold in the second half. But Cinibulk was equal to the challenge. His first big save came with 20:38 to play on good shot from Greblick. Cinibulk saw the ball and made the dive, turning the shot away from harm. Greblick had another shot a few minutes later that Cinibulk saw and turned aside.
With time running out in the second half, Geoffrey Rouin got free for Rochester and fired a shot from 10 yards out that Cinibulk turned aside. On the ensuing corner, Cinibulk saved the ball off his line on a scramble in front of his net.
In the overtime, RIT was whistled for a foul in their own penalty area. Bryce Ikeda covnerted the penalty kick for the Yellowjackets for the win.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when the they host Nazareth at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
