Women's soccer rolls to 2-0 win over St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team (3-1-1) defeated St. John Fisher College (1-2-1) 2-0 in non-conference action from sun drenched Tiger Stadium Wednesday afternoon. Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) scored the Tigers goals. Thiel also added an assist to tie a career-high with three points.

Shots were 20-6 in favor of RIT, who fired seven shots on net. The Tigers took four corner kicks to two for the Cardinals. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) got the win in net for RIT, making two saves. Gabriella Cotugno took the loss for Fisher, making four saves.

"I thought it was a great effort today," said RIT head coach Liz Masterson. "We continue to make great progress overall, just need to be a bit more precise offensively."

RIT took a lead in the tenth minute when Parzych tallied her fourth goal of the season. Thiel sent Parzych in on a breakaway with a pass from the midfield. Parzych had the defender on her shouder and sprinted past when Thiel played the ball. Parzych beat Cotugno through her legs to give the Tigers an early lead.

Fisher's best chance came in the 21st minute. Brianna Sammon fired a shot from the top of the RIT penalty area that whistled just wide of the post.

In the 27th minute, Thiel had a chance to make it 2-0 when she fired a shot that Cotugno saved. The rebound got away from Cotugno and towards Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy), but a Fisher defender blocked the ball before she could fire a shot.

Madison Ehring (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) had a chance with a little over 15 minutes to play in the half when she fired a shot on net from 15 yards out. Cotugno made the save to keep it a 1-0 RIT lead at halftime.

Thiel gave RIT a 2-0 lead on her goal in the 53rd minute. Parzych fired a good hard shot on net that Fisher defender Nicolette Nigro saved off the line. Thiel was right there for the rebound and slid a shot first-time into the net for a 2-0 Tigers lead.

RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 26-8-1.

RIT returns to action this Saturday when they travel to SUNY Fredonia to face the Blue Devils at 12 p.m.
