ELMIRA, NY — The RIT (2-2-1) men's soccer team finished with a scoreless draw on the road against Elmira College (1-2-1) from Campus Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite the scoreless draw, the game featured several scoring chances, however, as the Tigers fired 16 shots, five on net. The Soaring Eagles had 13 shots, six of which were on target. RIT sophomore goalkeeper
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) recorded his third shutout of the season with the six save effort.
"It was another hard fought game (Wednesday). We had a much more proactive attacking mentality and were much more dangerous in the second half. I liked that everyone was pushing forward to try and get us a goal," said head coach Bill Garno. "All that said, we leave disappointed that we didn't secure the result, but look forward to our derby (at University of Rochester) on Saturday."
Perhaps the best scoring chance for the Tigers came in the 76th minute, when sophomore
Gene Sicoli (Commack, NY/Commack) was taken down in the box by Elmira goalkeeper Jacob Liese, leading to a penalty kick. Sicoli's shot headed to the bottom right corner of the goal was stopped by Liese, keeping the score at 0-0. That all came just minutes after a prime scoring opportunity by the Tigers ended in the ball ringing off the crossbar.
The Tigers offense couldn't ultimately find the net, but RIT had nine corner kicks, as opposed to Elmira's six.
Akram Meza (Troy, NY/Troy) had three shots, two on target, and
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) also fired two shots, one on net.
The overtime periods saw the most action offensively for both teams. In the 20-minute span, RIT led the way in shots 7-3 (2-2 on goal).
The Tigers will compete next in the Hillside Community Shield at the University of Rochester on Saturday, at 7 p.m.
