ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (18-22, 12-12 Liberty League) closed out the 2016 season, falling to St. John Fisher (31-9, 16-2 Empire 8) in a wild 20-13 contest at Tiger Stadium on a sunny and seasonably cool Monday afternoon. Senior
Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and junior
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) each broke school records in the three-plus hour contest.
In his second at-bat in the bottom of the third inning, Gorman ripped a 1-0 pitch through the left side for his 59th hit of the season, which breaks a school record, originally set by Colin Bradley in 2006. Gorman also hit two home runs to finish with eight on the season, tying a 36-year old record. In the bottom of the first, Gorman pulled a 1-1 pitch down the right field line, the ball just staying fair well over the fence. In the fifth, Gorman smashed a 2-0 pitch to right center field, the ball travelling well over 400 feet for a three-run homer. Gorman finished 4-for-6 in the contest, with six RBIs and two runs scored.
Gorman drove in an incredible 34 runs over his final 12 games, finishing the season with a school record 52 RBIs, in addition to 107 total bases, also a single-season program mark.
In his final contest as a Tiger, Zabel stole his 24th base, breaking the single season mark, set by
CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) last season, Justin Smith in 2009 and Matt George in 2008. After a single to get on base in the fourth, Zabel took off on the second pitch to
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy), reaching second safely to set the new mark. Zabel ended his career with a 2-for-6 effort, driving in a run in the sixth inning.
The Tigers finished with 19 hits in the contest. Mylott went 3-for-6, with two RBIs.
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) finshed his collegiate career with three hits.
Brian Battaglia (Sliver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) entered the game as a sub behind the plate, and went 1-for-2 to cap off his RIT career.
Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) started for the final time as a Tiger, pitching two innings, recording a strikeout.
Jameson Moran (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo),
Tom Dillon (Oswego, NY/Oswego),
Mark Nozzi (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit),
Jake Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden),
Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit), and
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) all pitched in relief for RIT. Moran was the pitcher of record.
Mike Roman went 4-for-6 to lead St. John Fisher, with three RBIs. Scott Eisenmenger and Frank Carnevale both homered in the victory. Dominick Pisciotto picked up the win, striking out three batters in three innings of work. The Cardinals benefitted from 10 walks and four errors.
St. John Fisher finished the season sweep against the Tigers, winning all four contests. The Cardinals won two home contests on April 1 and April 7, and beat the Tigers 2-0 on May 4. Fisher holds a 44-29 advantage in the all-time season series.
The Cardinals were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead early in the first inning, before Gorman reduced the deficit to two on the two-out homer in the bottom of the frame, and tied the game on a run-scoring double to right center field by Mylott. In the top of the third, two crucial errors scored three Fisher runs. The Tigers were able to cut into the deficit, first on Schultz racing home on a passed ball in the third, then on a RBI single up the middle by Gorman.
With the Cardinals hanging on to a 6-5 lead in the fifth, five straight walks, including three with the bases loaded, contributed to an eight-run inning. In the bottom of the frame, it was the Tigers turn to strike with six runs of their own to reduce the deficit to 14-11. Zeglen started the scoring with a double to right center, scoring
Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick). Blasi then hit a sacrifice fly into right field, scoring Zeglen. With Zabel on first, Mylott then doubled down the right field line, scoring Zabel, before Gorman capped it off two batters later with the three-run shot.
The Cardinals then put the game away with a big five-run sixth inning, before adding a run in the eighth. The Tigers scored runs in the sixth and the eighth innings, for the final tally.
