Baseball sweeps Bard in Sunday's doubleheader to wrap up Liberty League play

Gorman, Zabel set program records in game two victory

ROCHESTER, NY – Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) of the RIT baseball team (18-21, 12-12 Liberty League) set season and program marks, leading the Tigers to a doubleheader sweep of Bard (10-30, 5-19 Liberty League) on a rainy and cold Sunday afternoon. RIT took game one 7-3, and braved through the elements in a 12-8 victory in game two.

Gorman, who entered the doubleheader as the RIT record holder for at-bats in a season, drove the first pitch he saw in the eighth inning of game two, on one hop over the centerfield wall, for a run-scoring ground rule double. It was his 46th RBI of the season, tying his own mark from last season. Gorman's hit gave him 97 total bases on the season, which broke a 36 year-old record, held by RIT Athletics Hall of Famer Jeff Hall. With 57 hits on the season, Gorman is one hit shy of the single season mark.

Zabel tore up the basepaths in game two, tying a single-game record with four stolen bases, while equaling the single season mark, with 23. After stealing third base in the first inning, Zabel stole second and third base in the third, scoring on a throwing error by the catcher to give the RIT its first lead of the contest. In the ninth inning, Zabel stole second after reaching base with a walk. Zabel is one walk shy of the season mark of 30.

The Tigers finished off a four-game season sweep of the Raptors, improving their brief all-time record to 7-0 against them. RIT scored 55 runs in the four games.

In game one, the Tigers began the scoring with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. After Bard scored in the sixth to reduce the deficit to 4-3, the Tigers broke it open with a three-run seventh inning.

Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) continued his torrid hitting over the weekend, with a 3-for-4 effort in game one, driving in two runs. He started the scoring for the Tigers with an RBI double in the fourth inning, and capped off the three-run seventh inning with a run scoring single. Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) also led RIT with three hits, and an RBI. Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) went a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk, and Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) drove in two runs with his lone hit. The Tigers had 10 hits as a team.

Senior Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) picked up his fourth victory of the season, striking out nine Bard batters in the complete game effort, while only walking one. It is his 13th career win. He now has 55 strikeouts to just five walks this season.

Three batters each recorded two of Bard's nine total hits, and starter Evan Richardson was the pitcher of record. He allowed four runs in five innings of work, striking out four batters.

The Tigers took advantage of eight Bard errors to score the 12 runs in game two. After a run-scoring ground out by Hogan gave RIT the 3-0 lead, Bard rallied back to tie the game with two runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth, as heavy rain began to fall. The Tigers then took the lead, scoring two of three seventh-inning runs on wild pitches. After Bard scored two in the bottom of the frame to reduce the deficit to 6-5, RIT broke the game open with a five-run eighth, and added an insurance run in the ninth for the victory.

Zabel, Schulz, and Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) led the Tigers with two hits apiece in game two. Mylott recorded two RBIs and scored twice. Hogan went 1-for-4, driving in a team-leading three runs, adding a walk.

Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) picked up his second victory of the season in relief, striking out three batters in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Starter Kyle Povlock (Fairport, NY/Fairport) allowed just one earned run on six hits, striking out four in five innings of work. Mark Nozzi (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) and Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) also pitched in relief for the Tigers.

David Schlosser and Jack Hawke each recorded two hits, and drove in two runs to lead the Raptors. JP Fisher picked up the loss, allowing six runs in relief.

The Tigers will wrap up the 2016 season with a home contest against St. John Fisher on Monday at 1 p.m.
