Baseball scores 36 runs in doubleheader sweep over league foe Bard on Senior day

Gorman and Zeglen tie school records against Bard

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (16-21, 10-12 Liberty League) exploded for 36 runs, and hitters Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) and Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) set RIT records at the plate, as the Tigers swept Bard (10-28, 5-17 Liberty League) at Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers won game one 19-4, and 17-2 in the finale. The Tigers honored seniors Brian Battaglia (Sliver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake), Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton), Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg), Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas), and Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) before the doubleheader.

Gorman helped to provide the offensive fireworks, setting the RIT single game record for RBIs in game one, driving in eight runs. After his groundout scored RIT's opening run in the first inning, Gorman crushed a three-run homer to right field in the third, giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead. The very next inning, with runners at first and second base, Gorman drilled a 1-1 pitch deep to the same spot in right field, for his Liberty League-leading sixth homer of the season. In the fifth, Gorman tied the 17-year old record with a run scoring double down the right field line. Gorman went 3-for-5 in game one, scoring three times, and drove in two runs with his only hit in game two.

In game two, Zeglen hit two triples, which ties a program record. In the second inning, a deep triple in center field scored Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), which started a four-run inning. In the fifth, Zeglen smacked the first pitch he saw off the fence in dead center, driving in two runs to break the game open. The last player to hit two triples in a contest is Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) against Bard in 2014. Zeglen drove in three RBIs to lead the Tigers in game two.

Eleven RIT batters recorded two hits each in game one. Battaglia went 2-for-4, driving in three runs and drawing a walk. He hit his first home run of the season, taking a 1-1 pitch over the trees in left field in the fourth inning. Scialabba recorded three hits, stroking two doubles. Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) went 2-for-3, driving in two runs. Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) went 2-for-4 and walked twice.

The Tigers recorded a season-high 22 hits in game one, two short of the school record, which was done twice, also against Bard in 2014, and against SUNY Geneseo in 1959. RIT tallied runs in every inning of game one, scoring four times in the third inning, seven in the fourth, and three each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Brian Reed (Rochester, NY/Penfield) wiggled around a few early jams to up his second win of the season, striking out seven Bard batters in five innings of work. Sheridan fired two innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and striking out two batters.

Dylan Long led Bard with a 3-for-3 effort, driving in three runs. Bard recorded seven hits in game one.

In game two, The Tigers produced runs in six of their eight frames, scoring four runs in the second and fifth innings, two in the seventh, and five runs in the eighth inning. RIT recorded 18 hits.

Scialabba and Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) each recorded three hits, with Scialabba driving in two runs, Mylott driving in a season-high three runs. Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) went 1-for-4 with two walks. He stole his league-leading 19th base of the season in the second inning, sprinting home on a double steal. Zabel is just four stolen bases away from the single season record, which was set by CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) (2015), Justin Smith (2009), and Matt George (2008).

On the mound, Little allowed just two earned runs and struck out four, for his third victory of the season. Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) and Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the victory.

JP Fisher went 3-for-5 to lead the Raptors. Jeff Goldrosen and Matt Lasky each drove in a run. Starter Steve Marotta allowed 10 runs in the loss.

The Tigers will continue the weekend series with Bard on Sunday, closing out Liberty League play. First pitch of game one is slated for noon.
