PITTSFORD, NY -- The RIT (14-1) men's lacrosse had a record-setting day versus cross-town rival Nazareth College (11-5) on Tuesday, defeating the Golden Flyers 26-8 at Golden Flyer Stadium. The 26 RIT goals is the most scored versus Nazareth in 36 meetings between the two schools. The Tigers have now won nine straight versus Nazareth.
Sixteen different Tigers scored at least one goal, including
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy),
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy),
Brendan MacDonald (Georgetown, ON/Trinity-Pawling) and
Alex Bodin (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) who each had three goals.
JD Hall (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) and
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) each had a pair of goals, while Hall,
John Hill (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas),
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer) and
Alec Sulesky (Medina, OH/Medina) each had two assists.
Junior goalie
Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) turned in a sterling performance in net, making 15 saves in nearly 42 minutes of action. Nesbitt was brilliant in the first half, making 12 saves, including seven in the second quarter.
Jarryd Lee (Melbourne, Australia/St. Leonards) made five saves in 11 minutes of action, while
Jon Berg (Chester, NJ/Mendham) and
Michael Sztorc (Pawlet, VT/Burr & Burton Academy) made a save each over the final 7:02 of the game.
The Tigers came out hot, jumping out to a 7-0 lead less than seven minutes in, while holding a 9-3 edge at the end of the first quarter. RIT tacked on four more goals in the second quarter to lead 13-4 at the half. The Tigers tacked on 13 goals in the second half, including eight in the fourth quarter.Â
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) scored two points on a goal and an assist to go along with four ground balls, going 2-of-3 on draws and causing three turnovers. Hossack was one of three long-sticks to score as
Josh Harris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) and
Anthony Contento (Homer, NY/Homer) each scored from the defensive unit.Â
RIT's offense came out firing in the first quarter, scoring the first seven goals. Hall and Sterzin each scored two goals in the opening run for RIT.
After two straight goals from Nazareth made it 7-2, Harris and Levick answered right back for RIT with two of its own, taking a 9-2 lead on Levick's second of the quarter. Sovocool, Levick, Contento and Hossack scored for RIT in the second quarter to extend the Tigers lead to 13-3 on Hossack's goal off a rebound with 48 seconds to play in the half.
Lee, Vakiener,
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) and
Zack Thompson (Orangeville, Ontario/Culver Academy) scored goals for RIT in the third quarter. The Tigers erupted for eight goals in the fourth quarter, including three from Bodin and two from MacDonald.
Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and
Aidan Milburn (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary) also scored for the Tigers in the quarter.
RIT's 26 goals in today's game were the most they have scored in a game since erupting for 28 in a 28-2 win over Elmira on April 6, 2011. RIT has scored 47 goals over its last two games, setting a school record for most goals in consecutive contests.
RIT improves to 17-18 all time versus Nazareth. The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 30 versus Bard at noon at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will honor the class of 2016 prior to the game, as they make their final regular season appearance at Tiger Stadium.Â
