POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- The RIT (5-8, 2-4 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team went on the road Friday and beat Vassar College (5-7, 1-5 Liberty League) 13-11 in a critical Liberty League game for the Tigers.
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) tallied her 200th career goal, recording seven points on four goals and three assists. She is the second player in program history to reach the 200-goal plateau.
RIT trailed 5-1 with 12:44 to play in the first half, but rebounded, out scoring the Brewers 12-3 over a 33-minute stretch spanning the first and second halves. Sarkis led RIT with seven points, giving her a career-best 67 on the season.
Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) tallied six points on five goals and an assist, while
Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) had a goal and an assist.
Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), Maegen Schmauder and
Brooks Melnyk (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) each scored a goal for the Tigers.
The Tigers held a slight 28-27 shot advantage, while Vassar won the ground ball battle, 24-20. RIT won 16-of-26 draw controls, and went 10-of-16 on clearing attempts. The Tigers went 4-of-7 on free position attempts, and caused 10 turnovers.
Cassie Swan (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) led RIT with four ground balls, while Sarkis, Schmauder,
Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields), Syndey DaCosta and
Claire Foggo (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) each had two.
Jordan Guerrieri (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) caused two turnovers, while
Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) won four draw controls.
Sophia Wojnovich (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) got the win in net for RIT, making 10 saves.
Isabelle Goldstein led Vassar with seven points on five goals and two assist. Julia Trudell tallied three goals, while Kim Mulvehill tallied a goal and dished out a pair of assists.
Vassar jumped to an early lead as Goldstein scored the first two goals of the game. Livecchi answered with her first of the game at the 22:42 mark of the first half, but the Brewers scored three straight, taking a 5-1 lead on Goldstein's third goal of the half.
Livecchi broke the Tigers scoring drought with her second goal of the half with 7:35 to play. Sarkis made it 5-3 Vassar on her first goal of the game with 6:03 to play in the half.
The Tigers kept the momentum going into the second half when Livecchi scored off an assist from Sarkis to cut the Vassar lead to 5-4 early in the half. After a Vassar goal made it 6-4, RIT rattled off three straight goals, taking its first lead of the game on Sarkis' goal with 23:54 to play. Livecchi began the run with her goal off an assist from
Jessica Gover (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), and Melnyk scored off an assist from Ward to tie the score at 6-6.
Goldstein answered right back for Vassar, tallying two striaght goals, givng the Brewers an 8-7 lead on her goal with 22:55 to play off an assist from Storm Sideleau.
The Tigers kept the pressure on however, coming right back to score six straight goals. Livecchi tied the score at 8-8 on her free position goal. Sarkis gave the Tigers a 9-8 lead on her 49th of the season. Bingo made it a two-goal lead with her goal with 18:06 to play, and Schmauder converted a free position attempt to make it 11-8 Tigers. Mandell made it 12-8 on her goal from Livecchi, and Sarkis converted a free position goal with 9:15 to play to make it 13-8.
Mulvehill and Trudell made it close down the stretch with late goals, but the Tigers held on for the conference win.
Sarkis joins RIT's all time leader in goals and points, Shelby Vakiener, as the only two players in program history to surpass the 200-goal and 250-point plateau. Sarkis is second all time at the university with 252 points on 200 goals and 52 assists. A model of consistency, Sarkis has scored at least 60 points in all four seasons at the university.
RIT returns to action on Saturday when the Tigers face Bard College at 4 p.m. in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
