RIT softball erupts for 15 runs in doubleheader sweep at Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY – The RIT softball team (13-15) returned to the win column, earning a pair of road victories at non-league foe Houghton College (5-25) from Kerr-Pegula Field on Thursday evening. RIT rolled to a 7-0 win in game one, and completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory in game two.
 
Junior Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) led the way for RIT in the doubleheader, going 3-for-7 with a pair of doubles and five runs batted in.
 
In game one, RIT scored three times in the top of the first inning and add three runs in the fifth inning. The Tigers would tack on a run in the final inning.
 
Sophomore hurler Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) allowed just one hit, a double off the bat of Bailey Shattell in the fourth inning. Mahar struck out eight batters for her fifth win of the season.
 
Sarah Thayer (Tully, NY/Fabius-Pompey), Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby), Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West), and Killian each had two hits. Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) drove in three runs with a bases clearing triple in the fifth inning, giving her 20 RBIs on the year.
 
In game two, Killian drove in three early runs as RIT raced to a 7-0 lead after four innings. Hotz was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) and Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) added two hits each.
 
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) picked up her eighth win of the year, scattering three hits, while striking out seven batters.
 
The Tigers are now 5-1 all-time against Houghton.

RIT returns to action on Saturday with a crucial Liberty League doubleheader against local foe University of Rochester. Action begins from Tiger Stadium at 1 p.m.
