AMHERST, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (3-6) got revenge on an earlier loss this season, coming up big in singles play to defeat Division II foe Daemen College (8-15) 5-4 at the Sweet Home High School Tennis Courts in Amherst, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.
This was the second match between the two teams this season, in which the Tigers fell to Daemen, 7-2, in the final match of the Daemen/Medialle Invitational. RIT went 2-1 on that weekend, earning runner-up status.
Down 2-1 coming into singles action,
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee),
Alyssa Hering (Albion, NY/Kendall),
Marie Jubert (Fairport, NY/Fairport), and
Kelsie Redburn (Byram, NJ/Pope John XXIII) came up big, getting crucial match wins to come from behind to win.
Ying recorded her first collegiate victory, battling through a tough first set to prevail, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 over Daemen's Karli Hollins. Hering took out Leighanna Hewes in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, and Redburn pulled away on Morgan Park, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Jubert got the Tigers' game-winning point, dominating late in a 6-3, 6-0 straight set victory over Jessica Robins.
All three doubles games went down to the wire. The team of Ying and Geanna Heaviland fell in a battle with Hollins and Hayle Scanlan, 9-8. In second doubles, Hering and
Brianna Dimisko (Hyde Park, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) fought hard, but fell to Robins and Gretchen Ringler 9-7. In doubles play, the team of Redburn and Jubert gave the Tigers a crucial victory to set up the six singles matches, defeating the team of Maria McGrath and Aman Shamaa 8-3.
RIT will take a break, resuming action on the road against Hamilton College on April 2 at 10 a.m. This is the fourth match of a seven-match road trip for the Tigers.
