Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Sports Information

Men's hockey rallies late for 4-4 road tie at Niagara

ROCHESTER, NY – Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) scored with 47 seconds left in regulation, as the RIT men's hockey team (13-12-6, 13-7-5 Atlantic Hockey) rallied for a 4-4 tie at Atlantic Hockey foe Niagara (5-20-6, 5-15-5 Atlantic Hockey) in front of 1,180 fans at Dwyer Arena.

RIT led 3-1 after one period, but Niagara would score three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead. With RIT goaltender Nick Amato (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Northern Cyclones) pulled for the extra attacker, Norrish would take a feed from Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) and from the right point and rocket a shot through the arm and body of Niagara goaltender Guillaume Therien to tie the game. It was RIT's fifth goal with the goaltender pulled in the last seven games.

In the overtime, RIT had a 2-on-1 just moments in, but could not capitalize. Niagara would have a few chances later in the overtime, but Amato and the RIT defense would hold on for the road tie.

RIT is now 9-1-3 on the road in league play this season. RIT is currently in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings with Holy Cross and Air Force with 31 points, three ahead of Mercyhurst for fifth.

Mitchell and Liam Kerins (Caledon, Ontario/North York Rangers) had a goal and an assist apiece, while Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73's) and Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) also scored. In net, Amato made 19 saves for the tie. Mitchell moved into fifth all-time at the university in the Division I level with 115 points on 31 goals and 84 assists, surpassing former line-mate Matt Garbowsky (St. George, Ontario/Powell River Kings).

Kevin Patterson, Stephen Pietrobon, T.J. Sarcona, and Matt DIneen scored for the Purple Eagles. Jackson Teichroeb played the first 16 minutes, stopping 9-of-12 shots, Guillame Therien came on in relief and was strong for Niagara, stopping 26-of-27 shots to pick up the tie.

RIT out-shot Niagara, 39-23. RIT was 0-for-5 with the man-advantage, while Niagara was 0-for-1. RIT has now allowed a power-play goal in seven consecutive games.

"I thought we played a great first period, but let them back into the game because we couldn't convert on the power-play in the second," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson. "It was gutty for us to get the tie after getting behind late in the third. Points this time of the season are valuable, so we will take a big road point."

A wild first period culminated in RIT scoring three unanswered times to take a 3-1 lead, while holding a 13-6 edge in shots.

RIT came out firing with a handful of great chances over the first five minutes, most notably a 2-on-0 down with Kerins and Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers) that went wide.

Niagara would get on the board first, 6:36 into the contest, as a long shot from Dineen eluded a screened Amato.

RIT would score three times in a span of 4:08 to take control. With 8:04 left in the opening period, Brown would clean up a rebound off a seemingly harmless shot by Kerins for his fifth goal of the season. Greg Amlong (O'Fallon, MO/UMass Lowell) would also assist on the goal, firing a pass through the neutral zone to Brown. Brown dropped a feed to Kerins, who fired a shot that Teichroeb looked to handle, but dropped right into the crease to Brown.

Just 1:27 later, Powell would strip a Niagara defender at the blue line and send Mitchell in all alone on a partial breakaway. Mitchell would make a nifty fake and calmly slide the puck between the pads of Teichroeb for his sixth goal of the season and 114th point of his career.

Kerins would get his seventh goal of the season with 3:56 left in the period off a rebound after a hard shot by Danny Smith (Edmonton, Alberta/Sherwood Park Crusaders), chasing Teichroeb. Michael Holland (Cambridge, MA/Chicago Steel) would also assist on the goal.

Amato would have to come up with two huge saves on Derian Plouffe. One came on a 2-on-1 rush right before the midway point of the period and the next, on a shorthanded chance off a turnover in the RIT zone late in the frame.

Despite four RIT power-plays in the second, Niagara would net the lone goal, as the Tigers would hold a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Niagara would cut the RIT lead to 3-2, 3:28 into the second period, as Sarcona one-timed a pass from in close from Johnny Curran.

RIT would have chances on the power-plays, but Therien would be there to deny all 11 RIT shots in the frame.

Amato would make a tremendous save on Albin Karlsson as the Niagara forward sped in on a breakaway right after a RIT power-play late in the frame. He tried to beat Amato high, but the RIT goaltender made a nice shoulder save and was able to catch the carom.

Tonight was the third of four meetings between the two schools this season. RIT and Niagara met for a home and home series on Dec. 11-12, 2015. On Dec. 11 at the Polisseni Center, Teichroeb stopped 24 shots, while Dan Kolenda scored both goals in a 2-0 win. The next night, RIT scored three power-play goals in a 4-2 win at Dwyer Arena. Mike Rotolo (Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) made 24 saves for the victory.

RIT is 3-1-3 against the Purple Eagles over the last seven meetings and have a three-game unbeaten streak at Niagara's Dwyer Arena.

RIT and Niagara wrap up its regular season series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. from the Gene Polisseni Center. The Tigers have two regular season home games remaining.
