ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's basketball team (18-5, 11-3 Liberty League) had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, losing to Clarkson University (19-4, 12-2 Liberty League) 63-51 on Senior Day at Clark Gym. The loss drops the Tigers to second in the Liberty League standings with two regular season games remaining. Despite the loss, RIT clinched a berth in the Liberty League postseason tournament.
RIT led 27-25 at halftime, but were out scored by the Golden Knights 38-24 over the final 30 minutes by Clarkson, who has won 14 straight games.
Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) led RIT with 14 points, while
Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) and
Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The Carroll School) each tallied 11 points for the Tigers.
"You should be able to win when holding a team in the 60's," said RIT head coach
Amy Reed. "We have to bounce back and be ready for a very tough William Smith on Wednesday."
RIT shot 34 percent from the floor on 18-of-53 shooting. The Tigers went 5-of-17 from behind the arc, and made 10-of-15 free throws. RIT held a 40-37 rebounding edge, including 12 offensive boards. RIT tallied 20 points in the pain and seven points off of 11 Clarkson turnovers.
RIT came out strong, leading 17-9 after the first quarter.
Taylor Burns (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) scored five of RIT's 17 points in the opening quarter, including a jumper with 2:12 to play giving RIT its largest lead to that point at 13-6.
Clarkson responded in the second quarter, cutting RIT's lead to 17-15 on a steal and layup by Ashley Loggins. She tallied seven of Clarkson's 16 points in the quarter. Olsen drained a jumper off an assist from
Jessica Shields (Lyons, NY/Newark) with 4:21 to play in the half, building the Tigers lead back to 24-17. Clarkson out scored the Tigers 8-3 over the final 4:21 of the half to trail 27-25 at the break.
RIT shot 37.5 percent in the first half on 9-of-24 shooting. Glaz led the Tigers with eight points, while Edwards added six points and three assists.
Lynch gave RIT a 36-30 lead with 6:08 to play in the third quarter capping off a 9-5 start by the Tigers in the second half. Clarkson battled back, taking its first lead since early in the contest on a pair of free throws by Stephanie Grobe. The Golden Knights out scored RIT 8-0 over the final 3:26 of the third to lead 45-38 going into the final 10 minutes.
The Golden Knights built their lead to 14 points in the fourth quarter on a layup by Devein Sorrell with 6:06 to play. A lay-up by Edwards with 2:41 to play in regulation pulled RIT to within seven at 55-48, but Clarkson made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Loggins led Clarkson with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Grobe added 15 points, while Sorrell added 17 points off the bench for Clarkson who shot 34.5 percent for the game.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, February 17 when they host William Smith College at 6 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym. It is RIT's final regular season home game of the season.
