HAMILTON, NY — The RIT women's hockey team (1-11-0, 0-2-0 College Hockey America) dropped the second game in this weekend's home-and-home series with No. 6 Colgate (10-0-1, 3-0-0 ECAC). The Tigers fell 4-1 on Saturday at the Class of 1965 Arena.
RIT sophomore
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) made a season-high 38 saves, while fellow classmate
Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario) tallied her second goal of the season. Colgate's Annika Zalewski had two assists, eight other Raiders had a point. Anonda Hoppner, Shae Labbe, Lauren Widfang, and Bailey Larson scored goals for Colgate.
"When we play a team like that, that's really talented, we have go to stay out of the penalty box and not give them extra opportunities," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey head coach
Scott McDonald. "I thought we did a poor job of protecting the front of the net for the most part."
Colgate got the scoring started just over seven minutes into the first period, as Hoppner finished a back-door pass from across the slot from Jessie Eldridge.
Sophomore goalie
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) was tested early for the Tigers, with a few key saves in the opening period. Colgate fired 11 shots on goal in the period, compared to five by RIT. The Tigers had a power-play opportunity towards the tail-end of the frame, and couldn't find the back of the net after a couple great chances in front.
Special teams came into play in the second period, as the Tigers took three penalties, giving the Raiders ample opportunities on the man advantage. Colgate converted on the second power-play of the game, as Labbe rifled a wrist shot through traffic and over de Jonge's glove, making it 2-0. The Raiders then added another power-play tally, as Wildfang scored on a slap shot from the point. The Tigers went into the second intermission trailing 3-0, including a shot deficit of 32-11.
The Tigers found the scoresheet in the third period, as Kennedy stole the puck from behind the goal and wrapped it around and into the net, making it 3-1 Colgate, 6:54 into the stanza. But Colgate struck back at the latter end of the period, as Bailey Larson finished a back-door goal with 7:29 left.
Colgate was 2-for-5 on the power-play, as opposed to a 0-for-3 mark for RIT. Colgate out-shot RIT 42-19 in the game as well.
"In the third period we started playing better, and with more effort," said McDonald. "It was a good third period, something to build off of. Overall I think we had a decent weekend against a very good team."
The Tigers will return to action next weekend in a two-game series against College Hockey America foe Robert Morris. Both games will be played at the Gene Polisseni Center. Puck drop on Friday is set for 6:05 p.m., and Saturday will begin at 2:05 p.m. The Tigers will have its annual Skate With the Tigers event after Saturday's game.
