ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's swimming and diving team improved to 4-2 in 2016-17, securing a 186.5-103.5 victory over visiting Alfred University (1-4) at the Judson Pool on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers dominated throughout, winning the 200-yard medley relay to start, while nine different student-athletes combined to win 11 events.
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area) and
Ryan Facchine (Fairview, PA/Fairview) won a pair of events apiece to pace the Tigers.
Paine took the 200-yard freestyle by just under two seconds in 1:49.66, while winning the 200-yard backstroke by just under two seconds over teammate Nick Genovese in 2:07.44.
Facchine was victorious in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. He won the 50 in a close race over Paine in 22.73 seconds, while taking the 100-free over
Jason Cook (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) in 50.56 seconds.
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods) was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke over Nick Genovese by just under a second in 55.30 seconds.
Spencer Hall (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) and
Wil Seifried (Springfield, PA/Springfield) were 1-2 in the 200-fly. Hall won by three tenths of a second in 2:09.16.
John Stelmack (Toccoa, GA/Stephens County) won the 200-breaststroke in a stirring duel, hitting the wall first in 2:20.46.
Joe Wang (Framingham, MA/Framingham) won the 1,000-yard freestyle by just 11 one-hundredths of a second in a time of 10:39.23. In a wild turn of events, Hayes and Alfred's Alec Toth swam to a dead heat in the 500-free, both hitting the wall in identical times of 5:04.37.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Rothrock,
Shawn Nevers (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial),
John O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth), and Facchine won by seven one-hundredths of a second in 1:39.40.
On the diving side,
Alex Dieroff (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) won the 3-meter event with a tremendous score of 263.70.
Ben Hamilton (Addison, NY/Addison) took the 1-meter event over Dieroff with a score of 189.35.
Chase Van Duyne (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was third.
The Tigers are off until they host the 2016 Liberty League Championship, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3 from the Judson Pool and Webster Aquatic Center.
