Women's basketball opens 2016-17 season with 64-56 win at The College at Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY -- The RIT (1-0) women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 64-56 road win at The College at Brockport (0-1) Tuesday evening. The Tigers led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but held on in the fourth quarter for the eight-point win.

RIT shot 37.5 percent from the floor on 24-of-64 shooting. The Tigers made 6-of-15 from beyond the arc, and went 10-of-16 from the foul line. Each team grabbed 41 rebounds, while RIT assisted on 19 buckets.

Junior Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) led RIT with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. She went 2-of-3 from 3-point land and made all four of her foul shots. Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) had 11 points, while Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy) added 10 points. Senior co-captain Julia Bender (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with eight points. Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) tallied nine points and had nine assists, while Taylor Burns (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) chipped in eight points off the bench.

Faith Welch led Brockport with 13 points. Hannah Rehbaum added nine points and seven rebounds, while Emily Nestler tallied eight points and led the Golden Eagles with 12 rebounds. 

RIT led 21-15 after the first quarter thanks in large part to a 10-0 run. Tied 4-4, the Tigers scored 10 straight points, taking a 14-4 lead on a pair of Glaz free throws. She scored seven of the Tigers 10 points in the run.

Olivia Lebaron's three with 2:02 to play in the quarter capped off a 7-0 mini-run by Brockport and cut the RIT lead to 14-11. Burns hit a 3-pointer with six seconds to play in the quarter to give RIT its six-point lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Brockport tied the game at 23-23 on an old fashioned 3-point play by Rehbaum. She scored the bucket despite the foul and converted the free throw to tie the game.

RIT outscored Brockport 11-2 over the final 5:21 of the quarter, building its largest lead of the game. Lynch tallied four points, and Okada scored five, including a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to play in the half, giving the Tigers a 34-23 lead. Welch scored with time running out in the half to make it 34-25 RIT at the break.

The third quarter saw the Tigers build their lead to 15 points on Bender's jumper off an assist from Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley). Brockport responded with a 9-2 run to close ot the quarter, cutting the RIT lead to 46-38 on a pair of Welch free throws.

Rehbaum cut the RIT lead to 52-48 on her bucket with 5:26 to play in the final quarter. She and Nestler scored two straight buckets for the Golden Eagles to get as close to the Tigers as they had been since the first quarter.Glaz answered right back with a coast-to-coast bucket extending the RIT lead back to six points with 4:46 to play. RIT picked up its defense in the fourth quarter. Okada forced the steal that led to a bucket by Bender, extending the RIT lead to 56-48 with 4:08 to play.

Nestler cut the RIT to 56-52 with her layup with 2:56 to play. Once again, the Tigers responded. This time Olsen sank a jumper to make it 58-52. Burns drained her second three of the night with 1:23 to play to give the Tigers a 62-52 advantage. Free throws from Okada and Bender down the stretch extended the lead to 12 points. 

RIT travels to Southern California for a pair of games in Los Angeles this weekend. The Tigers play Occidental College on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. Saturday, RIT faces Whittier College at Occidental at 3 p.m.
