Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Alex Busch - Assistant Sports Information Director

Women's hockey drops second game of weekend series to Providence

ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT (0-4-0) women's hockey team fell 3-0 in the second game of the season-opening weekend against Providence (2-3-0) at the Gene Polisseni Center on Saturday afternoon.

The first period saw no scoring, but there were plenty of chances on both sides. Each team had a pair of power-play opportunities, but neither convert for the game's first goal.

The offense began for Providence in the second period. The Friars scored the first goal of the game, on the power-play, after a shot was sent on net by Kate Friesen and the rebound was put home by Blair Parent. Just over five minutes later, Providence added another power-play tally, this time off the stick of Rachel Rockwell.

Each team had three power-play opportunities in the second frame, but the Tigers failed to convert, while the Friars cashed in twice.

The third period saw one more final power-play goal by Providence, as Christina Putigna found the back of the net for the Friars, putting them ahead 3-0.

For Providence, Rockwell finished with three points (one goal and two assists), while Friesen had two assists in the game. The Friars went 3-for-11 on the power-play, while the Tigers were 0-for-10. RIT held a 33-26 edge in shots

In net, Providence's Madison Myers (2-3-0) picked up her second straight shutout, stopping 33 shots, while Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) (0-1-0) suffered her first loss of the season, making 23 saves.

"I thought we generated some pretty good chances, but it's just that finishing touch that we need to work on," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. "Pucks were hitting our sticks, we were there, but we just weren't finishing around the net. Going a weekend without a goal means something isn't right, so we'll have to make some adjustments heading into next weekend."

The team will return to action during Brick City Homecoming Weekend for a pair of home games against Union. The games will be played on Friday at 3:05 p.m. and Saturday at 12:05 p.m. from the Gene Polisseni Center.
