ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team plays its 2016-17 regular season home opening contests this weekend, as Providence College invades the Gene Polisseni Center for a pair of games on Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8. Both contests get underway at 2:05 p.m.

RIT has won each of its first two home openers at the Polisseni Center, defeating Union in 2014 and Minnesota State last season.

RIT played its first two regular season games of the 2016-17 season, dropping a pair of 2-1 decisions at Minnesota State of the WCHA. Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate) scored RIT's lone goal on Friday, while Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 36 saves. On Saturday, Wallace scored early in the first period to give RIT a 1-0 lead, before the Mavericks rallied with a goal in each of the final two periods. Lanteigne stopped 29 shots in defeat.

Lanteigne made her collegiate debut last weekend and impressed, stopping 65 of 69 total shots for a 1.95 goals against average and .942 save percentage.

Five of RIT's first-year players made their collegiate debuts over the opening weekend. In addition to Lanteigne, forwards Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe), Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic), and Jade Mancini (Burlington, Ontario/Bishop Tonnos), along with defenseman Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute) hit the ice. Baker recorded her first collegiate assist on Saturday.

Providence enters the weekend looking for its first win of the 2016-17 season with a 0-3-0 mark. Last weekend, the Friars lost a pair of home games to Robert Morris, both by identical 3-2 scores. The Friars finished 10-24-2 last season and advanced to the Hockey East Quarterfinals. This season, Cassidy Carels leads Providence in scoring with three goals and four points. Goaltender Madison Myers has played in all three games this season with a 3.37 goals against average and an .861 save percentage.

Providence won both meetings between the two schools last season at home by scores of 5-1 and 3-1. They were the first two meetings as Division I members. The Tigers lone win against Providence came 27 years ago, on Jan. 22, 1989, a 4-2 victory at Schneider Arena in Providence. The teams were once members of the ECAC in the late 1980s.

Video and live stats will available for Friday and Saturday's games. Both games will also be broadcast on WITR 89.7 FM and witr.rit.edu.

Come out and support the Tigers in their home opening weekend.
