Szybist surpasses 2,500 career kills as volleyball falls to Stevens

NEW YORK, NY - Senior Sarah Szybist (Colorado Springs, CO/Ramstein) became the seventh player in the history of Division III women's volleyball to reach 2,500 career kills, as the RIT volleyball team (20-16) fell to Stevens Institute of Technology (28-4) in three sets at the New York State Regional Challenge, hosted by New York University at Hunter College Friday evening.
 
Stevens, who is receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Division III poll, hit .337 as a team with 45 kills, while RIT hit .198 with 34 kills. Stevens won the three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-15.
 
Szybist, who was held to just eight kills in the match, now has 2,503 career kills. She leads all of Division III with 710 kills in 2016-17. It was the first time since Oct. 9, 2015 that Szybist was held to less than 10 kills in a match, breaking a streak of 52 straight contests.
 
Sophomore middle hitter Liz Wunder (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) continued her strong play for the Tigers, hitting .556 with 10 kills in just 18 attempts with three assisted blocks. Szybist added a team-high 11 digs, while Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) recorded 10 digs. Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) had 21 assists, while Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) and Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) combined for nine kills.
 
Mary Tobin led the Ducks with 16 kills to go along with 10 digs, while Casey King hit .524 with 12 kills and 10 digs. Brianna Perez dished out 34 assists to go along with three blocks.
 
The Tigers conclude the 2016 regular season on Saturday with matches against host NYU at 10:30 a.m. and Montclair State University at 2:30 p.m.
