ITHACA, NY -- The RIT men's soccer (5-8-3) went on the road Tuesday, beating Ithaca College (6-8-1) 2-1 at Carp Wood Field.
Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY /Hilton) and
Scott Fishel (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) scored first half goals for the Tigers, who snap a six-game winless streak.
"That was a good win for our team against a tough, well-coached Ithaca team," said RIT head coach
Bill Garno. "I am proud of the effort and discipline we we showed today."
Shots were 14-13 in favor of Ithaca. The Bombers took seven corner kicks to three for the Tigers. DeFeo and Fishel each scored, while
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) assisted on both RIT goals.
Chris Dill (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) got the win in net, making five saves.
Patrick O'Mara (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) played the second half, making two saves. Dan Hinckley took the loss for Ithaca, making four saves.
RIT took a lead on DeFeo's goal in the 11th minute.
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) fed DeFeo who scored on a shot to the far post for his second goal of the season. Fishel gave RIT a 2-0 lead on his goal in the 24th minute. Garno served up another service, this time off a free kick. He sent a ball into the area and Fishel headed it in for his first goal of the season.
"I was happy to see Anthony's goal hard work pay off with our first goal," said Garno. "Simon's service to Fishel on the second goal was delivered perfectly."
Ithaca cut the RIT lead in half on Sam Boylan's goal in the 35th minute. Boylan scored off a rebound with the assist going to Nathan Schoen.
RIT generated some good chances in the openeing moments of the second half.
Will Schiesswohl (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Township) flicked a ball into space inside the Ithaca box, but Hinckley came off his line to smother the ball before DeFeo could get a shot away.
With about 36 minutes to play,
Mike Reverdatto (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) had a chance off a scramble in front of the Ithaca net. Garno sent a ball into the area off a free kick, that rattled around the box. Reverdatto got a toe to the loose ball, but his shot was saved off the line by an Ithaca defender.
"Dean and Will won a ton of balls in the middle, and did a great job establishing our possession," stated Garno. "Our back four of Fishel,
Tristan Scott (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Reverdatto and
Ben Frenett (Spencerport, NY/Allendale Columbia) were solid all game."
Dante DeSisti (Reston, VA/South Lakes) made a nice defensive play when he came back to cover the far post and disrupt a shot by Schoen off a service from the opposite side. O'Mara made a great save in the 67th minute off a shot by Eric Hepler. O'Mara dove to his left, pucnhing the shot aside and out of danger.
"Chris and Pat were both solid all game," said Garno. "They both were in command splitting time in goal."
RIT's defense held strong in the second half, killing off the last few minutes.
"Despite the lack of results the past few weeks, we have been playing pretty well," said Garno. "We look forward to the opportunity to finish the season with another big effort on Saturday."
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they host Hobart College at 2 p.m. RIT will honor Fishel, the lone senior, prior to Saturday's game in honor of his final appearance at Tiger Stadium.
