ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (4-8-3, 1-5-1 Liberty League) men's soccer team was defeated by St. Lawrence University (11-3-0, 4-3-0 Liberty League), 2-1 on a blustery and cold afternoon at Tiger Stadium Saturday.
Shots were 14-9 in favor of the Saints, while corner kicks were even at 3-3. Mike Smith got the win in net for St. Lawrence, making two saves.
Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) took the loss for RIT, making three saves. Charlton Kelly and Tapshak Augustine each scored for St. Lawrence, while
Ahmed Alrefaei (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Al-Alhli) tallied his first collegiate goal for RIT.
St. Lawrence took the lead on Kelly's goal in the fourth minute. Brendan McNamee started the play when he sent a ball out wide to Augustine. He sent a service into the RIT penalty area that Kelly ran onto and scored first-time for his third goal of the season.
The Tigers answered right back on Alrefaei's goal in the sixth minute. He found himself free inside the Saints penalty area, and beat Smith with a shot low into the far right corner. It was his first collegiate goal and tied the score at 1-1.
Augustine gave the Saints a 2-1 lead on his goal in the 20th minute off an assist from Jethro Dede.
Tyler Hatch (Concord, NH/Tilton School) had a chance late in the first half when he got free inside the Saints box. Hatch tried a quick shot, but Ross Suitor blocked the shot before it could go on net. With about eight minutes to play before halftime, RIT generated another chance.
Will Schiesswohl (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Township) sent a pass into
Akram Meza (Troy, NY/Troy), but his shot went just wide of the net.
Dede had a great chance to give the Saints a two-goal lead, but his shot 66th minute was blocked off the line by RIT captain
Scott Fishel (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), who turned the shot aside and out of danger.
RIT had a coule good chances inside the last six minutes of regulation.
Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had a chance that was blocked and the rebound was loose inside the St. Lawrence box. The Tigers could not quite get a shot away as the Saints defense cleared the ball out of danger.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Ithaca College. The Tigers close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they host Hobart College on Senior Day at Tiger Stadium.
