Women's soccer drops critical Liberty League home match to Vassar

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (6-6-1, 2-3-0 Liberty League) women's soccer team was defeated by Vassar College (7-5-1, 5-0-0 Liberty League) 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Tiger Stadium in a key Liberty League matchup. With the loss, the Tigers slip into a tie for fifth place with Rensselaer in the Liberty League standings. Vassar remains tied with No. 1 William Smith for the Liberty League lead. Those two teams play Saturday at William Smith.

Shots were 10-9 in favor of Vassar. RIT took four corner kicks to two for the Brewers who remain tied with No. 1 William Smith for first in the Liberty League standings. Stephanie Tapolsky got the win in net for Vassar, making four saves. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) took the loss for RIT, making seven saves.

Rebecca Andrews scored the game's lone goal, tallying in the 49th minute. The Tigers fired four shots on target, including two from first-year Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington).

The Tigers had agood chance early in the first half off a corner kick. Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) sent the ball out to Lauren Chester (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), who then sent a service into the Vassar penalty area towards Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna). Parzych's header was right at Papolsky who made the save. Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) had a chance in the 21st minute when she fired a shot from 15 yards out that just missed the post.

Vassar had a golden opportunity when RIT was whistled for a foul inside their own penalty area. Andrews stepped and took the shot, but Rogers was there to make the stop, keeping the game scoreless at halftime.

Andrews gave the Brewers the lead on her seventh goal of the season in the 49th minute. She fired a shot from just outside the RIT box that sailed over the outstretched hands of Rogers and into the net.

Saia had a chance with a little less than four minutes to play when her shot from 20 yards sailed wide. Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had a shot go just wide of the target with three minutes to play, and Alur had a chance from the top of the box with time running out that was just off target.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. when they host Bard College. The Tigers will honor the class of 2017 with a brief ceremony prior to kick-off on Saturday.
