Women's hockey falls 2-1 in series finale at Minnesota State

MANKATO, MN — The RIT (0-2-0) women's hockey team fell 2-1 in a tight battle on Saturday, in the second game of the weekend against Minnesota State University (2-0-0) at the Verizon Wireless Center.

The Tigers opened the scoring just 2:51 into the game, as senior Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate) registered her second goal in less than 24 hours. RIT kept the puck in the zone on an attempted clearing pass by Minnesota State, and Wallace took it from there, firing it over the left pad of Mavericks goalie Katie Bidulka and into the net. Freshman Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute) recorded her first career point with the assist on the goal.

At the end of the first period, the Mavericks had a chance to tie the game on a breakaway with just seconds remaining, but freshman Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) kept the Tigers ahead with a great pad save. Lanteigne had another impressive showing in just her second career game at the college level. She stopped 29 of 31 shots fired her way, for a total of 65 saves on 69 shots in two games this weekend.

The Tigers took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but the Mavericks scored an early goal of their own in the second period. Freshman Sofia Poinar scored her first career goal on a rebound in front, tying the game at one goal apiece.

The game was then tied entering the final period of play, and Minnesota State took the lead on a scramble in front of the RIT net, where senior Savannah Quandt had the puck go off her skate and in the net, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers rang a shot off the post in the final minute of play with the goalie pulled, but RIT couldn't find the game-tying goal. Wallace had four shots in the game, and freshman Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) followed her with three.

Bidulka had 12 saves on 13 shots, recording her first win of the season. The Tigers were 0-for-2 on the power-play, and the Mavericks were 0-for-1.

The Tigers return home for a four-game homestand, beginning with a weekend series against Providence on Friday and Saturday, both starting at 2:05 p.m.
