ROCHESTER, NY – Senior defenseman
Brad Shumway (Lafayette, CO/Chicago Steel) scored with 8:56 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie and lift the RIT men's hockey team (8-10-2, 8-5-1 Atlantic Hockey) to a 4-3 win over visiting Canisius 6-14-2, 6-8-2 Atlantic Hockey) in front of 2,810 fans at the Gene Polisseni Center on Saturday evening.
Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) fired a pass to
Caleb Cameron (Sundridge, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) in the slot, who then backhanded a no-look pass to Shumway at the right point. Shumway was able to take a few strides in and fire a hard wrist shot over the glove of Canisius goaltender Simon Hofley for his first goal of the season and second of his career. It was Shumway's first goal since Jan. 25, 2013 vs. Niagara, a span of 67 games.
Canisius threatened late, as Cameron Heath fired a shot off the right post with 6:30 left. The Golden Griffins also received a power-play with 2:15 left in regulation, but RIT goaltender
Christian Short (Vaughan, Ontario/Surrey Eagles) and the RIT penalty-killing unit did the job to hang on for the win. In the final minute, Geoff Fortman fired a shot through a maze of bodies that Short somehow got a pad on.
RIT led 3-2 heading into the third period, but Canisius knotted the game at 3-3, as Shane Conacher took a cross ice feed from Dylan McLaughlin and beat Short for his 14th goal of the season.
Shumway tallied a goal and an assist and was named the game's first star.
Abbott Girduckis (Belleville, Ontario/Wellington Dukes),
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals), and
Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers) also scored for the Tigers. Mitchell recorded his 99th career point, an assist on Shumway's winning goal. In goal, Short made 15 saves to pick up his fourth victory of the season.
Conacher scored a goal and added two assists for Canisius, while Ralph Cuddemi tallied two goals. In goal, Simon Hofley stopped 38 shots in defeat.
RIT out-shot Canisius, 42-18. RIT was 1-for-8 with the power-play, while Canisius was 1-for-7.
"I thought we controlled play very well and were able to capitalize on the chances we received," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "It was a weird game with a lot of power-plays on both sides and our penalty killing came up big when we needed it."
The Tigers played a solid first period, out-shooting Canisius 16-4 and taking a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Canisius struck on the opening shift, just 34 seconds in, as Conacher fired a shot that went off the left post from down low on the left side, with the rebound caroming right to Cuddemi in the slot. Cuddemi was able to slam the puck into the open net for his 13th goal of the season.
RIT struck back just over three minutes later, as Girduckis redirected a point shot from Shumway past Hofley for his fourth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
Garrett McMullen (Churchville, NY/Trail Smoke Eaters) kept the play going below the goal line, getting the puck to
Todd Skirving (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sioux Falls Stampede) along the boards. Skirving fed Shumway, whose shot looked to be going wide, but Girduckis perfectly tipped it past Hofley to the far side.
RIT had 23 seconds of a two-man advantage late in the period and were unable to score on it, but got a power-play on the second penalty, as Powell took a feed from Abt in the neutral zone, zipped around a Canisius defender and ripped a hard wrist shot past Hofley off the left post and in for his team-best ninth goal of the season and sixth power-play tally to make it 2-1.
Alexander Kuqali (Pittsburgh, PA/Sioux City Musketeers) also assisted on the goal.
Canisius took two tripping penalties on the same shift with 26 seconds left in the opening period, giving RIT a full two minutes of a 5-on-3 power-play.
RIT technically would not score on the 5-on-3, but one second after it ended, take a 3-1 lead 1:35 into the second period, as Valenzuela ripped a shot from the slot past Hofley, with Chase and
Brady Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) assisting on the goal. It was Valenzuela's sixth of the season.
The Golden Griffins would get to within one just over five minutes later, as Cuddemi scored his second goal of the night and 13th of the season 7:01 into the frame to make it a 3-2 game. Conacher fired a shot from the left point that Ryan Schmelzer tipped in front, causing Short to make a big save. The rebound came right to Cuddemi in front and he roofed a shot over Short for the goal.
RIT would out-shot Canisius, 12-6 in the period, but found themselves shorthanded three times.
Short made his best save of the game just 40 seconds into the third period, robbing Cuddemi with a pad save as the Canisius forward walked in from the right face-off circle and went to the backhand in close.
Last night, McLaughlin scored a goal and added two assists to pace Canisius to a 6-3 win, snapping RIT's five-game unbeaten streak against them dating back to the 2013-14 season. Valenzuela scored a goal and added an assist in the loss for the Tigers.
RIT is 60-20-2 all-time against the Golden Griffins and 21-10-1 since the start of the 2005-06 season.
The Tigers head out on the road for four straight contests. Next weekend, RIT heads to Bentley University for a pair of games against the Falcons. Friday's game from the John A. Ryan Skating Center starts at 7:05 p.m., as does Saturday's contest.
