ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team begins the 2016 calendar year by heading east for its final two non-conference games of the season to play Providence College of Hockey East on Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9. Friday's contest begins at 2 p.m., while Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m.
After this weekend, RIT plays its final 12 games against College Hockey America foes.
RIT (4-15-1, 0-7-1 College Hockey America) enters the New Year looking to snap a five-game winless streak. Before the break, RIT played 10 of its final 11 games at home. RIT will end the regular season by playing nine of its final 14 contests on the road.
Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) leads the Tigers in scoring with 11 points on six goals and five assists.
Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area),
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School),
Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers), and
Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) are right behind with 10 points apiece. Thurston has a team-high eight assists. In goal,
Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale), and
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot), and
Jetta Rackleff (Bend, OR/Summit) have all seen significant action. Stoddart has a team-high three wins, while Rackleff has a 2.08 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.
The Friars skate into this weekend's matchup with a 6-13-0 record, after dropping two games against CHA member Robert Morris on the road, 6-1, and 4-1 to kick off 2016 last weekend. Christina Putigna is the leading point-getter and assist leader for Providence, tallying 18 points and 13 assists. Brooke Boquist is the leading goal scorer this season, with nine. Three of the five leading point scorers for the Friars are underclassmen. In goal, Madison Myers has appeared in 14 games, going 3-8-0 with an .876 save percentage and a 3.33 goals against average. Providence is looking for its first win against the CHA this season, with a 0-3 record.
These are the first two meetings between the two schools as Division I members. Providence leads the all-time series, 17-1-0. The schools last played on Feb. 4, 1995, as they met at Ritter Arena. The Tigers lone win against Providence came nearly 27 years ago, on Jan. 22, 1989, a 4-2 victory at Schneider Arena in Providence. The teams were once members of the ECAC in the late 1980s.
