ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team continues its road swing with two games against College Hockey America foe Penn State on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30. Friday's game from the Pegula Ice Arena is at 7 p.m., while Saturday's is at 2 p.m.
Last weekend, the Tigers (6-19-1, 2-9-1 CHA) earned a split against CHA foe Syracuse, winning 2-1 in overtime on Friday, while falling on Saturday, 3-0. On Friday, Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) scored both RIT goals, including the dramatic winner a minute into overtime, while Jetta Rackleff (Bend, OR/Summit) stopped 41 of 42 shots. Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) assisted on both RIT goals, while Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline) added an assist on the game-winner, as the Tigers hosted their annual "Skate for the Cure" game, wearing special purple jerseys that were auctioned off for "Do It For Daron." On Saturday, Rackleff made 35 saves in a 3-0 loss at Syracuse.
Rackleff has impressed since returning from injury. In league play, Rackleff is sporting a 1.81 goals against average and an incredible .946 save percentage. She has averaged 34 saves per game in the last eight contests. She has the best goals against average in conference play, and her .931 save percentage ranks 12th nationally.
Penn State comes into the weekend matchup with a 7-14-5 record, with a 3-4-5 record in CHA play, good for fourth place in the league. The Nittany Lions were the only team in the conference to go unbeaten last weekend, beating Robert Morris 3-2 in overtime in game one, and settling for a 2-2 draw in the Saturday finale. Amy Petersen is the team leader in assists, with 13, and points with 17. Petersen tallied three assists and scored a goal over the weekend to earn CHA Player of the Week honors on Monday. Laura Bowman is the leading goal scorer for Penn State, with 10. In net, Celine Whitlinger is one of the top goaltenders in the conference, among the national leaders in goals against average (1.67) and save percentage (.943).
RIT and Penn State will meet for the third and fourth times over a 15-day span this weekend. Just two weekends ago, at the Gene Polisseni Center, RIT shut out the Nittany Lions, winning 3-0 On Jan. 15, while Penn State earned the 3-2 overtime victory the next day. RIT is 12-4-2 all-time against the Nittany Lions, including a 2-2-2 record at the Pegula Ice Arena. Penn State has had the upper hand recently, winning four of the last five meetings in the series.
