WALTHAM, MA – Senior
Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) becsme the ninth player in RIT's Division I history to record 100 career points as the men's hockey team (10-10-2, 10-5-1 Atlantic Hockey) completed the weekend sweep, beating Bentley (8-13-2, 6-9-2 Atlantic Hockey) 6-3 at the John A. Ryan Skating Arena Saturday night.
Mitchell joined the century club on
Caleb Cameron (Sundridge, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones)'s goal with 8:40 to go in the second period. Mitchell would also score a crucial shorthanded goal with 8:03 left in regulation and assist on Cameron's second goal of the game with 3:42 left. He now has 29 goals and 73 assists for 102 points in 137 career games.
The line of Mitchell, Cameron, and
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) combined for 10 points. Cameron tallied two goals and an assist, while Mitchell finished with a goal and two assists. Powell dished out a career-high and RIT season-high four assists.
Garrett McMullen (Churchville, NY/Trail Smoke Eaters),
Mark Logan (Calgary, Alberta/Brooks Bandits ), and
Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) also scored goals for the Tigers. In goal,
Christian Short (Vaughan, Ontario/Surrey Eagles) picked up his third straight win overall and sixth victory of the season, stopping 27 shots.
Both teams struggled on the power play, going 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Shots slightly favored Bentley for the second straight night, with the Falcons leading, 30-29.
Kyle Schmidt scored two goals, and added an assist to lead the Falcons. Max French added a goal and two assists, while Andrew Gladiuk assisted on all three Bentley goals. In goal, Jayson Argue had 21 saves in 51:57 minutes of ice time, while Gabe Antoni stopped 2-of-3 shots in the final 8:03.
With the victory, the Tigers are 7-0-1 in road Atlantic Hockey contests, and have won six out of their last seven contests. The eight-game unbeaten streak in Atlantic Hockey play is the second best in school history, just behind a nine-game streak from Dec. 6, 2008 to Oct, 23, 2009.
I thought our captains did a good job in the locker room regrouping after the 1-0 deficit," said RIT men's hockey head coach
Wayne Wilson. "We came out and had a really good second period, and a smart third period. We got nine goals on the weekend, which is pretty darn good, but we still have to convert on more of the chances that we get."
Bentley came out of the gates fast in the first period, as Schmidt opened the scoring at the 9:24 mark. French, with the puck behind the net, found Schmidt, who was inside the faceoff circle, beat Short high for the goal.
After the first intermission, RIT came out fired up. The Tigers got on the board as Skirving found McMullen just inside the top of the faceoff circle. McMullen unleashed a slap shot that beat Argue high at 2:02 in the second. Just 1:16 later, RIT struck again, as Logan took advantage of Argue losing his stick momentarily, taking a feed from Norrish in front of the net and banging it in to give the Tigers the lead.
Mitchell tallied his 100th point later in the second period, at the 11:20 mark, as he and Cameron found themselves on a 2-on-1 break. Instead of immediately taking the shot, Mitchell waited for the defense to commit, then patiently fed a streaking Cameron, who found the back of the net, beating Argue wide.
Late in the period, Schmidt scored his second of the game at the 18:40 mark, as he fired a shot from the goal line that caught a piece of Short's pads, and trickled into the net.
The scoring continued into the third period at the 3:21 mark, when Norrish skated hard towards the right side of the net on an individual effort. He spun and found the net on the backhand to get the puck between the legs of Argue, giving the Tigers the 4-2 lead.
The Falcons quickly responded, as this time Schmidt found French cross-ice on the left side of the goal, who buried the chance to once again bring the deficit to one.
RIT responded with two goals of its own to put the game away for good. With Bentley on the power play, Mitchell brought Argue out of the net, eventually tallying his second shorthanded goal of the season. That goal, at 11:57, gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead, and chased Argue out of the game, with Antoni to replace him. RIT quickly got to Antoni, as 21 seconds later Cameron got his second of the game from a behind-the-net feed from Powell, beating Antoni on the second shot he faced.
With the victory, the Tigers were the only team in AHC play to record a sweep over the weekend, holding a commanding lead over Air Force for third place in the conference. RIT is now two points behind Holy Cross, and four behind first-place Robert Morris.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 19-11-2, including a 17-10-2 record since the Division I era started in 2005. The road team won all four meetings this season.
The Tigers will continue their road trip with a weekend matchup against Sacred Heart. Game one will begin Friday, Jan. 22, at 7:05 p.m.
