POTSDAM, NY – The RIT women's basketball team (10-3, 3-1 Liberty League) dropped its first Liberty League game of the season Friday, falling at Clarkson University (9-4, 4-2 Liberty League), 74-65. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak by the Tigers. Clarkson ended the game on a 16-3 run.
Three players scored in double figures for RIT led by freshman
Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy), who tied her season high with 18 points.
Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) tallied 16 points and had 11 rebounds, while
Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) added 14 points for the Tigers who shot 41.9 percent from the floor.
The highest scoring team in the Liberty League, RIT wen 26-of-62 from the field, including 8-of-23 from 3-point land. The Tigers went 5-of-7 from the foul line, while holding a 41-35 rebounding edge.
Ashley Loggins led Clarkson with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Devin Sorrell added 17 points, while Stephanie Grobe scored 15 points for Clarkson who shot 40.9 percent from the floor.
RIT trailed 12-4 early in the first quarter, but came back to within 12-8 on a layup by Okada. However, Clarkson out scored the Tigers 7-0 over the final four minutes of the quarter to lead 19-8 after the first quarter. The Tigers made just 4-of-13 field goals in the opening quarter.
The Golden Knights opened up their lead to 27-12 late in the second quarter on a pair of free throws by Madison Shea. RIT answered, pulling to within nine on a layup by Okada. She scored the Tigers final five points of the opening half to make it 32-23 at the break. Okada led the Tigers with 10 first-half points, who went 10-of-28 from the floor.
RIT opened up the third quarter with a 10-2 run, pulling to within three points at 39-36 on a 3-pointer from Glaz at the 6:36 mark of the quarter. Clarkson responded with a run of its own, out scoring the Tigers 11-2 over the final 6:36 to lead 45-40.
The Tigers came out firing in the fourth quarter. Lynch gave RIT its first lead of the game with 6:42 to play in the fourth quarter off an assist from Olsen. Later in the quarter, Okada drained a deep three from the top of the key, extending the Tigers lead to 62-58. Once again, Clarkson responded, closing out the game on a 16-3 run.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 when RIT faces St. Lawrence University at 2 p.m. in Canton, N.Y.
