RIT men's soccer set to host Rochester in 4th Annual Hillside Community Shield

ROCHESTER, NY -- The Hillside Family of Agencies along with Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield have once again teamed up with RIT and the University of Rochester men's soccer teams to put on the fourth annual Hillside Community Shield, a fundraiser aimed at supporting the youth and families served by Hillside through the game of soccer. For the first time in its brief history, this year's game will take place on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium on the campus of RIT.

The Tigers come into the game with a 2-3-0 record after a 2-0 win over Elmira College on Tuesday. Rochester is 2-2-1 on the season after a 1-0 win over Buffalo State, also on Tuesday.

Last year, Rochester beat the Tigers, 3-2 at Sahlen's Stadium. After trailing 2-0, RIT stormed back with two second-half goals, tying the score at 2-2 on Dakota Kelger's goal in the 65th minute. Nick Pastore tallied late to give the Yellow Jackets the win. Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) also scored for the Tigers, while Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) made two saves in net.

This season, RIT is proud to have former soccer greats Paul Schojan, Frank Hinchey and Bernie Student serve as honorary captains. This year mark the 30th anniversary of the 1985 team that went 12-1-3 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament, which all three were captains of.

Despite suffering season ending knee injuries in 1983 and 1985, many consider Bernie Student to be one of the finest defenders to ever play at RIT. A three-time all-conference selection, Student was a strong, ball winning center back who contributed seven goals and two assists over the 49 games he was healthy and started during his four-year career. He earned All-New York State honors after starting 21 games in 1984, helping the Tigers to a 19-1-1 record and an appearance in the 1984 NCAA national semifinals.

Frank Hinchey made a major impact on the RIT men's soccer program from 1984-87. He was an All-American selection in 1986, and capped off his career as the RIT Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1988. A native of Gates, Hinchey was part of an RIT soccer dynasty. During his career, the Tigers participated in four NCAA championships, reaching the semifinals in 1984 when they finished with and impressive 19-1-1 record. Considered one of the top midfielders in Division III, Hinchey tallied 59 career points, ranking him among RIT's top-10 all-time scorers. Hinchey put together back-to-back 20-point seasons in 1985 and 1986. As a senior, Hinchey was an All-American selection as the tigers posted a 13-1-2 mark. He was a three-time All-Empire Athletic Association selection and a two-time All-New York State pick.

This season is the 30th anniversary of Schojan's final season at RIT. After arriving at RIT in 1982 from Gates Chili High School, Schojan became one of the greatest players ever to play for RIT, earning All American honors in 1984 and 1985. He was selected to play with the top players from Divisions 1, II, and III in the prestigious 1985 Senior Ball, and remains on top of the RIT career scoring list with 115 points on 35 goals and 45 assists.

Since finishing his career at RIT, Schojan has remained a leader in the Rochester soccer community, leading and playing for the Rochester United Men's team, coaching in the Rochester Futbol Club, and officiating high school games.
