PITTSFORD, NY – The No. 20 RIT (5-0-1) women's soccer team scored two first half goals en route to a 4-0 win over St. John Fisher (2-3-1) on Wednesday evening from Growney Stadium. Junior
Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored two goals, while
Courtney Hunt (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and
Sarah Stoltzfus (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) each scored for the Tigers, who are unbeaten in their first six games to start the season. I
t is the fifth consecutive shutout win for RIT, who have not allowed a goal in 503:15 minutes."We worked on having a strong start to the game and we really wanted to win the first half," said RIT head coach
Liz Masterson. "Fisher definitley challenged us in different ways, and we handled the pressure well."
Shots were 14-10 in favor of the Tigers. RIT fired 10 shots on goal, to only two for the Cardinals.
Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) played all 90 minutes in net for RIT, making two saves for her fourth win of the season. Sarah O'Brien took the loss for St. John Fisher, making two saves.
RIT broke through in the 15th minute when Hunt scored from about 20 yards out. The Tigers had built momentum, earning a corner kick off a shot from
Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna). The play started when
Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) dribbled through and around Fisher defenders in the midfield, finding Parzych with a pass. She was able to fire a shot on goal that O'Brien tipped over the cross bar. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball eventually came out to Hunt who scored her second goal from long range this season.
Culhane scored the first of her two goals in the 21st minute off an assist from
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland). It was May who started the play, finiding Culhane out on the flank. Culhane sent a service into the box towards Parzych who was making a darting run down the middle. A Fisher defender got a piece of the ball, deflecting it into the Fisher net for a 2-0 lead.
Shots were 6-5 in favor of RIT at the half, with the Tigers firing five shots on net to two for the Cardinals. Rogers stopped the only two shots she faced in the first half.
Just after halftime, Culhane struck a second time, giving the Tigers a 3-0 in the 48th minute. Thiel got free down the flank and sent a low cross into the Fisher penalty area. Culhane found herself unmarked inside the box and was able to gather and fire a shot into the net for her second goal of the game and second of the season.
Stoltzfus put the game away with her goal in the 80th minute on a volley from 18 yards out off an assist from
Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark). From the top of the Fisher penalty area, Stoltzfus took the pass from Ornellas and whipped a volley that beat O'Brien into the topright corner for her second goal of the season.
The Tigers defense continued its strong play, holding the Cardinals to just two shots on net. It is the first time in program history that RIT has recorded five straight shutouts. The 503:15 scoreless streak is a program record.RIT is right back in action on Saturday, Sept. 19 as they host SUNY Fredonia at 2 p.m. on the grass at Tiger Stadium.
