ROCHESTER, NY – Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) tied the school record for goals in a single game with four goals, as the RIT women's soccer team (4-0-1) posted an impressive 8-0 victory over Medaille College (0-4) on a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
Ornellas' four goals are the most goals by a single player since 1989, when Chris Jung tallied four against St. John Fisher. She shares the record with three former Tigers.
"I was very grateful for the opportunities," said Ornellas, who returned to the team after an injury sidelined her for the first four games. "I just asked God for the opportunity and the composure, and I'm very grateful that I am on the road to recovery."
RIT scored its most goals in a game since 2000, when they scored a school record 13 vs. Mt. St. Mary. The eight goals are the fourth most in program history. Throughout the game, the Tigers controlled play, keeping the ball in the Medialle half for most of the contest. RIT also dominated the shot count, racking up a 34-1 advantage.
RIT started the scoring early on, as
Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) took a shot off a
Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) corner kick in the sixth minute. The ball floated harmlessly to the feet of Parzych, who calmly took the shot at point blank range, to the left of the Medialle goalkeeper.
The Tigers struck again in the 40th minute, when Ornellas scored the first of four, as she powered a kick in the open net off of a corner kick by
Courtney Hunt (Brockport, NY/Brockport). That combination struck again just two minutes later, as Ornellas smashed a header into the net.
In the second half, RIT controlled possession once again, getting their fourth goal in the 47th minute when
Riley Yankowich (Norristown, PA/Germantown Academy) laced a shot from just inside the box, the shot far too wide for the Medialle keeper to handle. A few minutes later,
Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) got onto the score sheet, as she rebounded a deflection off of a Medaille defender in the box, getting an open opportunity at goal. That 50th minute goal took the lead to 5-0.
In the 69th minute,
Sarah Stoltzfus (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) struck a screamer of a shot from right inside the left side of the penalty box after a pass by
Stephanie Kotula (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing Area). That shot flew into the left corner, with the keeper unable to get a handle on it.
The Ornellas hat-trick came in the 80th minute, as her aggressiveness paid off, as a ball that was deflected off the Medialle goalkeeper landed in the feet of Ornellas, who was able to flick the ball into the net. That record-tying goal came a few minutes later, in the 82nd minute, when Ornellas reacted quickly to a scrum that developed in front of the net after a ball was played deep into the box. Ornellas, wisely got to the right spot, and put the ball into the net, and with that, her name in the record books.
"It was great to see us getting a win with a complete team," said RIT head coach
Liz Masterson. " It was nice to have people contribute in different ways in this game."
The Tigers will continue their impressive unbeaten streak to start the season with mid-week tilt on the road against local foe St. John Fisher (2-2-1). The Wednesday match will take place at approximately 7 p.m.
