Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Steve Jaynes - Sports Information Director

May's late goal extends women's soccer's unbeaten to streak after 1-0 victory at SUNY Cortland

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) scored in the 83rd minute to give the RIT (3-0-1) women's soccer team a 1-0 win at SUNY Cortland (2-2-0) on Saturday. The Tigers have won three straight games, have a four-game unbeaten streak, and have not conceded a goal in 313 minutes.

"We were hoping to go to Cortland and play a tough game and learn more about ourselves," said RIT head coach Liz Masterson. "We accomplished that and it is great to come home with a win."

Shots were 12-8 in favor of the Red Dragons. RIT took six corner kicks to two for SUNY Cortland. Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) got the start in net for RIT, making three saves in 45 minutes of action. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) played the second half and picked up the win, making one save. Rachel Axt took the loss for Cortland, making two saves.

In a scoreless first half, shots were even at six apiece. May had two shots, including one on net late in the half that Axt stopped. The Tigers took two corner kicks to one for the Red Dragons.

After halftime, Danielle Losquadro (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) had a nice chance late in the half that Axt was able to save.

The Tigers finally broke through with 7:34 to play in regulation when Losquadro found May with a cross that the senior captain tucked into the net for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 RIT lead. The play started when May played Losquadro. She beat her defender and served a nice ball into the box that May put away the first time.

"It was great to put the goal in with minutes to play," said Masterson. "We had worked hard all game long. I thought it was a well-derserved goal for our players."

The Tigers defense was able to keep the Red Dragons off the scoreboard the remaining seven minutes, allowing just one shot on goal. Rogers made her lone save in the 84th minute off a shot from Vanessa Romero.

It is the third consecutive shutout win for RIT. The Tigers have not allowed a goal since the 67th minute versus Nazareth in the season opener on Sept. 1, a span of 313:35.

"Today's game was good practice for us on our first road trip," said Masterson. "We know what it takes to get off the bus and play right away against tough competition."

RIT is right back in action on Sunday,as they host Medaille College at 2 p.m. on the grass at Tiger Stadium.
