No. 1 RIT men's lacrosse set to face defending national champion Tufts University in NCAA Semifinal Sunday

ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 1 RIT men's lacrosse team will face defending national champion, No. 5 Tufts University in the semifinals of the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. The semifinal game takes place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 17 at Tiger Stadium.

RIT comes into Sunday 21-0 and ranked No. 1 in the USILA Division III Coaches Poll. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals with an 18-7 win over SUNY Cortland in the second round on Wednesday. Senior Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led the Tigers attack with eight points on six goals and two assists. Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored five of his six goals in the fourth quarter. Junior Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) tallied five goals, and Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) added three goals. Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) had two goals and two assists, and Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) got the win in net for RIT making 10 saves.
 
Tufts advanced to the semifinals with a 17-10 win over Amherst College in Wednesday's quarterfinal game. Ten different Jumbos scored led by the duo of John Uppgren and Garrett Clarke who each scored three goals. Alex Salazar got the win in net making 16 saves. It is the fifth time in six seasons that Tufts has advanced to the semifinal game.
 
RIT comes into Saturday as the highest scoring team in Division III, averaging 18.20 goals per game. RIT has outscored its opponents 382-155 this season and has scored at least 12 goals 20 times. The 382 goals scored breaks the previous school record of 347 set in 21 games last season. The Tigers have scored 20 goals in a game eight times this season, while the man-up unit is eighth in Division III, converting 28-of-63 (44.4%) of its chances.

RIT features 17 players with 10 or more points, nine players with at least 20 points, six players with 45 or more points, and three players with at least 70 points on the season. Six Tigers have at least 34 goals. Lee leads the team in scoring with 96 points on 60 goals and 36 assists. His 96 points are second most in one season at the university, while his 60 goals are tied for sixth most in a season. He has scored at least one point in all but one of his 42 career games.
 
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) is second in scoring with 77 points on 44 goals and 33 assists, and Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) is third with 70 points on 44 goals and 26 assists. Warren is one of eight players in program history to surpass the 200-point mark. He currently is sixth all time with 230 points. Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) is fourth in scoring with 57 points and is three goals shy of tying the school record for career goals of 177, held by Chris Copeland. Senior defensive midfielder Brad Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) is fifth in scoring with 53 points and leads the team with 42 assists and is second with 84 ground balls.

Defensively, RIT allows 7.38 goals per game. Johnston has started all 21 games in net, with a 21-0 record, an 8.34 goals against average and a .580 save percentage. Johnston is 56-4 in his career, and is the all time wins leader in program history. Junior long-stick midfielder and 2015 Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) is eighth on the team in scoring with 26 points on 12 goals and 14 assists, leads the team with 47 caused turnovers and 114 ground balls. He won 17-of-26 face-offs in the quarterfinal game versus Cortland.
 
RIT has won 343-of-607 (56.5%) of its face-offs led by sophomore Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) who has won 116-of-204 (56.9%) of his draws. Freshman Jake Quay (Latham, NY/Shaker) has won 147-of-266 (55.3%) draws this season and has 36 grounds balls.

Tufts come into Sunday's semifinal game 19-2 on the season and are third in division III averaging 16.52 goals per game. The Jumbos have outscored their opponents 347-189, and are converting 36.6% (37-of-101) of their man-up chances. Defensively, Tufts allows 9.00 goals per game and has held opponents to 10 goals or less 17 times. The Jumbos have won seven straight games, out-scoring their opponents 120-58 during that stretch

Uppgren leads the team in scoring with 115 points on 67 goals and 48 assists. Austin Carbone is second in scoring with 54 points while Ben Andreycak is third in scoring with 49 points. Conor Helfrich is one of the top face-off men in Division III winning 64.6% (320-of-495) of his draws with 196 ground balls. Salazar has played the majority of the minutes in net for Tufts with an 18-2 record, an 8.87 goals against average and a .625 save percentage.

The Tigers are playing in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and 17th time in school history. Overall, RIT is 19-16 all time in NCAA Tournament games. It is the sixth straight season the Tigers have reached the quarterfinals, and third straight season in the semifinals.

Tufts is 4-1 all time versus RIT. The two teams are meeting for the fifth straight season in the NCAA Tournament. RIT is 1-1 in quarterfinals, beating the Jumbos, 14-5 in 2013. Tufts has won all three semifinal meetings at Tiger Stadium, including a 21-11 win last season at Tiger Stadium.

Tickets for Sunday's game can be purchased at the main gate and are $5 for adults, $3 for students and $2 for children.
