No. 1 RIT men's lacrosse set to face No. 10 SUNY Cortland in NCAA quarterfinals on Wednesday

ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 1 RIT men's lacrosse team will face No. 10 SUNY Cortland for the second time this season, in the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. The quarterfinal game takes place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13 at Tiger Stadium.

RIT comes into Wednesday 20-0 and ranked No. 1 in the USILA Division III Coaches Poll. The Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-9 come-from-behind win over Union College in the second round on Saturday. Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) scored the game winner with 22 seconds to play in regulation off an assist from Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute). Lee led RIT with five points on four goals and an assist, while Warren finished with four points on two goals and two assists. Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) got the win in net making six saves, including three big stops in the fourth quarter.
 
SUNY Cortland advanced to the quarterfinals with a 13-6 win over Endicott College in Saturday's second round game. Senior Matt Rakoczy and junior Zach Hopps each had five points on three goals and two assists for the Red Dragons. Scott Tota made 13 saves in net for the Red Dragons who advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the 14th consecutive season.
 
RIT comes into Wednesday as the highest scoring team in Division III, averaging 18.20 goals per game. RIT has outscored its opponents 364-148 this season and has scored at least 12 goals 19 times. The 364 goals scored breaks the previous school record of 347 set in 21 games last season. The Tigers have scored 20 goals in a game eight times this season. RIT's man-up unit is eighth in Division III, converting 27-of-62 (43.5%) of its chances.

RIT features 16 players with 10 or more points, nine players with at least 20 points, six players with 45 or more points, and three players with at least 60 points on the season. Lee leads the team in scoring with 92 points on 58 goals and 34 assists. His 92 points are tied for second most in one season at the university, while his 58 goals are tied for sixth most in a season. He has scored at least one point in all but one of his 41 career games.
 
Warren is second in scoring with 75 points on 44 goals and 31 assists, and Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) is third with 62 points on 38 goals and 24 assists. Warren is one of eight players in program history to surpass the 200-point mark. He currently is sixth all time with 230 points. Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) is fourth in scoring with 57 points and is three goals from tying the school record for career goals of 177, held by Chris Copeland. Senior defensive midfielder Brad Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) is fifth in scoring with 53 points and leads the team with 42 assists and is second with 79 ground balls.

Defensively, RIT allows 7.40 goals per game. Johnston has started all 20 games in net, with a 20-0 record, an 8.42 goals against average and a .580 save percentage. Johnston is 55-4 in his career, and is the all time wins leader in program history. Junior long-stick midfielder and 2015 Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) leads the team with 45 caused turnovers and 99 ground balls. He is eighth on the team in scoring with 24 points on 12 goals and 12 assists.
 
RIT has won 325-of-578 (56.2%) of its face-offs led by sophomore Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) who has won 115-of-202 (56.9%) of his draws. Freshman Jake Quay (Latham, NY/Shaker) has won 147-of-265 (55.5%) draws this season and has 36 grounds balls.

SUNY Cortland comes into Wednesday's second round game 16-4 on the season, averaging 12.20 goals per game. The Red Dragons have outscored their opponents 244-172, and are converting 34.8% (24-of-69) of their man-up chances. Defensively, Cortland allows 8.60 goals per game and has held opponents to 10 goals or less 12 times. The Red Dragons have won 14 straight games, out scoring their opponents 182-105 in that stretch

Hopps leads the team in scoring with 74 points on 39 goals and 35 assists. Mike Cantelli is second in scoring with 45 points while Rakoczy is third in scoring with 41 points. Pat Baldwin is one of the top face-off men in Division III winning 68.5% (270-of-394) of his face-offs with 157 ground balls. Tota has played the majority of the minutes in net for Cortland with a 16-3 record, an 8.27 goals against average and a .547 save percentage.

The Tigers are playing in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and 17th time in school history. Overall, RIT is 18-16 all time in NCAA Tournament games. It is the sixth straight season the Tigers have reached the quarterfinals.

Cortland is 20-16 all time versus RIT. The Tigers have won three straight over the Red Dragons dating back to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. On March 11, RIT defeated SUNY Cortland 12-11 at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University. Lee scored three goals for RIT, while Gillies dished out six assists. Hopps and Cantelli led Cortland with three goals apiece.
