ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (7-8, 4-4 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team out scored the Buffalo State College 6-2 in the second en route to a 14-10 win over the Bengals (4-11) on a chilly afternoon at RIT's Turf Field. With the win, RIT improves to 5-8 all time versus the Bengals.
Shots were 27-26 in favor of Buffalo State. RIT grabbed 23 ground balls, while the Bengals grabbed 17. The Tigers won 11 draw controls, and were 16-of-21 on clearing attempts and were 1-for-5 on free position tries.
Freshman
Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with five goals.
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) tallied six points on three goals and three assists, while
Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) added five points on two goals and three assists.
Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) had two goals and an assist and
Maegan Schmauder (Franklin, MA/Franklin) tallied a goal and an assist, grabbed four ground balls, won a draw control and caused five turnovers.
Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) got the win in net, making 13 saves.
Alanna Herne led Buffalo State with five points on three goals and two assists. Christina Krowel scored two goals, while Courtney Lowd, Meghan Farrell and Alexis Wilensky each had a goal and an assist. Colleen George took the loss in net for the Bengals, making eight saves.
RIT took an early 1-0 lead on Sarkis' 41st goal of the season at 28:24 of the first half. The Bengals responded with four straight goals, taking a 4-1 lead on a Farrell goal off an assist from Herne at the 17:20 mark of the first half.
The Tigers responded with a pair of goals from Sarkis and Livecchi, pulling RIT to within 4-3 on Livecchi's goal with 15:42 to play in the first half. After a Lowd goal gave the Bengals a5-3 lead, RIT answered with three straight goals, taking a 6-5 lead on Livecchi's 40th of the season. She scored two straight for RIT, both on feeds from Sarkis.
Goals from Sarkis and Schmauder rounded out the first half scoring for the Tigers, while Krowel scored twice, and Wilensky added a goal, tying the score 8-8 at the break.
Mandell opened the second half scoring with two straight goals for the Tigers, extending the RIT lead to 10-8 on her 19th goal of the season at 25:49 of the second half. Livecchi made 11-8 RIT off an assist from Mandell with 21:49 to play in the game.
Herne broke the scoring run by the Tigers with her free position goal with 18:31 to play, cutting the RIT lead to 11-9.
Goals from Bingo, DaCosta and Livecchi helped RIT maintain its second half lead. RIT's defense was solid in the second half, allowing just two goals. Conway made seven of her 13 saves in the second half.
RIT closes out the regular season on Saturday, April 25 with a crucial Liberty League game at University of Rochester beginning at 1 p.m. on the campus of Rochester. RIT needs a win to keep their Liberty League playoff chances alive.
