ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 1 RIT men's lacrosse team improved to 15-0 overall with an impressive 22-7 win over Liberty League rival, No. 11 Union College on Wednesday afternoon on the road. With the win, the Tigers are now unbeaten in their last 38 regular season games and improve to 5-0 in Liberty League play.
Shots were 48-38 in favor of the Tigers, while RIT held a slight 39-37 ground ball edge, and cleared the ball 12-of-14 times. In all, 12 different Tigers scored at least one goal, while 16 players tallied at least one point.
Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led the offensive onslaught with six points apiece, both with four goals and two assists.
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) scored three goals, while
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) tallied a goal and dished out a pair of assists.
Alex Bodin (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) scored a pair of goals and
Dave Shuster (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) had a goal and an assist.
Union took an early 2-0 lead on goals from Richard Gregory and Tom Stanton. Kiesa got the Tigers on the board with the first of his three first half goals. Jack Scheufele made it 3-1 Dutchmen on his goal off a feed from Stauffer at the 8:16 mark of the first quarter.
Lee scored off an assist from Kiesa at 6:20 of the first quarter making it 3-2 Union, and Kiesa tied the score at 3-3 on his second goal of the quarter. Warren gave RIT its first lead on his goal with 2:30 to play in the quarter.
After a Charlie Ross goal made it 6-5 early in the second quarter, the Tigers rattled off eight straight goals, taking a 14-5 lead on a tally by
Alec Sovocool (Homer, NY/Homer) with 4:08 to play in the half. Levick scored all three of his goals in the second quarter to help RIT pull away. Richardson scored late for Union making it 14-6 at the half.
Shots were 29-20 in favor of RIT in the first half. Kiesa and Levick lead RIT with three first-half goals, while
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) made three saves in net for the Tigers.
RIT kept the pressure on Union in the third quarter, outscoring the Dutchmen, 4-1 in the quarter. The Tigers defense tightened hold Union to one goal in the third and fourth quarters and three goals after a four-goal first quarter.
Jarret Schmauder (Franklin, MA/Franklin) opened the third quarter scoring with his first goal of the season, increasing the RIT lead to 15-6. Lee scored nice goal off a feed from Kiesa at 8:22 of the third quarter, making it 16-6.
After a Union goal made it 16-7, Lee and Kiesa each scored late in the third quarter, increasing the Tigers lead to 11 goals at 18-7.
Two goals from Bodin and one each from
Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) and Shuster in the fourth quarter put the game away for the Tigers who have scored 20 or more goals in six games this season, including the last two.
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) got the win in net, making 10 saves.
Jarryd Lee (Melbourne, Australia/St. Leonards) played the final 11:40 and made three saves.
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) went 10-of-15 from the face-off "X" today with a goal and six ground balls.
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) dished out an assist and grabbed four ground balls. In all, RIT's defense caused 10 Union turnovers.
RIT improves to 14-3 all time versus Union. The Tigers return to action on Saturday, April 18 when the Tigers face Liberty League foe Skidmore College at 12 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
