ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT women's tennis team (3-7, 2-2) defeated Liberty League adversary, Union College (3-10, 1-5 Liberty League) in a thrilling 5-4 win on Saturday afternoon at the RIT Tennis Courts. The Tigers overcame the blustery weather conditions and maintained a sense of focus and drive in order to come through with a clutch victory. The squad now has a two game winning streak.

The afternoon commenced with the singles lineup of Sara Bjork (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs), Gianna Heaviland (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito), Diane Wang (Ames, IA/Ames), Paige Baker (Fairport, NY/Our Lady of Mercy), Riane Reithel (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Marie Jubert (Fairport, NY/Fairport). Both Bjork and Wang dominated during their respective matches. Bjork used power and control to her advantage in her 6-2, 6-3 win as she effortlessly moved her opponent across the court. Wang was able to succeed in her match through effective ball placement and composure in her remarkable 6-2, 6-1 triumph. Lastly, Jubert was up in her match 3-2 when her opponent was forced to default due to injury. Thus, moving into the doubles portion of the contest, the score was split.

The doubles lineup for the Tigers was Bjork and Baker, Heaviland and Bridget Avery (Jackson, MI/Northwest) at second doubles and Riane Reithel (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Diane Wang (Ames, IA/Ames) at the third doubles position. Reithel and Wang were able to secure a much-needed win with a score of 8-5 win due to solid communication and strategy. The fate of the match however fell into the hands of Bjork and Baker due to the 4-4 score. Bjork and Baker pulled away with the win in an exhilarating tiebreak with a score of 9-8 (7-5). The duo remained calm despite the pressure of the situation and succeeded with impressive serves, volleys and groundstrokes. Most importantly however, the Tigers never gave up during their match and were ready to battle it out until the end.

RIT is looking forward to keeping the momentum going at noon on Sunday against SUNY Oneonta at their annual Tiger Den event.
