ROCHESTER, NY – Seniors
Matt Giannino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) and
Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) will represent RIT at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships from March 13-14 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Giannino will compete in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter championship, while White will go for the title in the 800-meters.
Giannino, a 17-time Liberty League Male Track Athlete of the Week selection, is ranked fifth nationally in the 3,000-meters. He shattered the school record at the Penn State Tune-Up Meet, on Feb. 21 winning the 3,000-meters, in an incredible time of 8:13.99. Giannino's time shattered the old record set in 2008 by Mike Hardbarger by nearly 18 seconds. He missed the top time in the country by three hundredths of a second, and his time is the 10th fastest in Division III history.
His time of 14:15.85 is, by far, the fastest time in Division III this season in the 5,000-meters. He set the record on Jan. 31, crushing a 21-year old school record at the Division I John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University. Giannino bested RIT Hall of Famer Kevin Collins' school record of 14:28.66, which was set in 1994. It is the fastest time in Division III this season and among the top-15 fastest times in Division III history.
Giannino will race for the 5,000-meter title on Friday, March 13 at 5:50 p.m. and race for the 3,000-meter championship on Saturday, March 14 at 4:45 p.m.
White holds the second-fastest time nationally in the 800-meters this season. She shattered the school record in the 800-meter run at the Penn State Tune-Up Meet on Feb. 21 in a tremendous time of 2:10.38. White's time in the 800 broke the previous set in 2005 by Danielle Simmons by 3.32 seconds, and was, at the time, the top time in Division III. She is a three-time Liberty League Performer of the Week in 2014-15, and has earned the honor five times in her career.
Preliminaries for the 800-meters are at 4:05 on Friday, March 13. The finals take place on Saturday at 3:45 p.m.
