BROCKPORT, NY – The No. 2 RIT men's lacrosse team (3-0) scored the game's first 16 goals, rolling to a 23-3 win over The College at Brockport (0-2) at Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium on a cold, Wednesday afternoon. RIT has now won 27 straight regular season games dating back to March 27, 2013.
The Tigers led 10-0 after the opening quarter, 15-0 at halftime, and 19-2 after three quarters of play. RIT received contributions up and down the lineup, as 13 different players scored goals and 19 had at least one point.
Senior midfielder
Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) led the way with five goals, including three man-up tallies. Sophomore
Drew Tosaya (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) tallied career-highs of three goals and two assists, while
Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) also had five points on a goal and four assists.
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) recorded two goals and an assist, while
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy),
John Hill (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), and
Alex Bodin (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) had two goals each. Bodin's goals were the first two of his collegiate career.
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) recorded a pair of assists, while
Cory Ashmore (Sutton, Ontario/Sutton District),
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park), and Zach Thompson added a goal and an assist apiece.
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport),
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), and Mike Gulasey also scored for the Tigers. Gulasey's goal was his first with RIT.
Garrett Eddy (Bowmanville, Ontario/St. Stephens),
Phil Spiridigloizzi (Utica, NY/Whitesboro), and
Josh Kemp (Couquitlam, British Columbia/Centennial) recorded their first collegiate points with an assist apiece.
RIT dominated all aspects of the contest, out-shooting the Golden Eagles, 54-13, while grabbing 60 ground balls to just 23 for Brockport. The RIT ride held Brockport to just 11 clears in 33 attempts. Brockport turned the ball over 34 times.
Face-off specialists Ricci, Spiridigloizzi, and
Jake Quay (Latham, NY/Shaker) combined to go 24-for-28 from the "X". Ricci was 7-for-8, while Quay went 8-for-9, and Spiridigloizzi was 9-for-11.
All four goalkeepers saw the field for the Tigers.
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) pitched a shutout in the first quarter to pick up the win, while
Jarryd Lee (Melbourne, Australia/St. Leonards) stopped his only shot faced on goal in a scoreless second quarter.
Jon Berg (Chester, NJ/Mendham) made his RIT debut, with a pair of saves over 20 minutes in the second half.
Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) played the final 9:55, also stopping two shots.
RIT's man-up unit was tremendous; going 5-for-9, Overall, RIT is 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) in that situation this season.
"I thought it was a good team effort, as we received contributions from our entire lineup," said RIT head coach
Jake Coon. "We will use the next week to get ready for two big games at the Carrier Dome against two really tough teams in Cortland and Cabrini."
Justin Cook, Mark Robinson, and John Countryman scored for the Golden Eagles. In net, Conor Nowak was under siege all afternoon, stopping 16 shots.
The Tigers exploded for 10 unanswered goals in the first quarter and led 15-0 at halftime, out-shooting Brockport, 34-3. RIT also won 15-of-17 face-offs, and had 35 ground balls to 10 for Brockport at the break.
Ricci opened the scoring just six seconds into the contest, winning the opening face-off, scooping up the ground ball and going right to the goal. Sterzin would take a feed from
Alec Sulesky (Medina, OH/Medina) moments later to make it 2-0. Aquin, Ashmore, and Kiesa would scored 36 seconds apart to make it 5-0 RIT just 6:30 into the contest and the rout was on.
A pair of Aquin goals sandwiched around one by Wallace made it 8-0 Tigers. Levick and Lee would tally in the final minute of the first quarter to give RIT a 10-0 edge. After Gulasey took a feed from Tosaya early in the second quarter made it 11-0 Tigers, Levick would score an incredible behind the back goal from 10 yards out with a flag down on the field for a 12-0 lead.
The Tigers would cruise to the win from there. Defensively,
Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) caused a pair of turnovers, while
Josh Harris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) was a force all afternoon with three ground balls.
Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) added five ground balls, while Hill had a team-high seven.
RIT's 23 goals scored were the most since a 23-4 win over Skidmore on April 19, 2014. The 20-goal margin of victory was RIT's largest since a 24-2 victory over Vassar on April 12, 2014.
Brockport leads the all-time series, 10-9, but RIT has won the last nine meetings between the two schools, dating back to 1979.
The Tigers are off this weekend and return to action on Wednesday, March 11 against No. 9 SUNY Cortland at the Carrier in Dome in Syracuse that begins at 7 p.m.
